Hurricanes beat Blues in Auckland




The third round in Super Rugby kicks off in Auckland where the Blues host the Hurricanes who beat them twice in 2015.

We are waiting for the kick off.

Beauden Barrett kicks off and we are underway.

2.00: The Blues go through 8 phases and then win a penalty for hands in the ruck. Jerome Kaino signals that Ihaia West will kick for posts.

4.00: West takes the kick but misses. Fans are still entering the stadium and there is an estimated 20 000 in attendance for this match.

7.00: The Hurricanes win the ball from a scrum. Perenara intially fumbles the ball but the Hurricanes recover and Barrett kicks the ball into touch. The Hurricanes have already made 17 tackles.

9.00: Penalty to the Blues. West takes another shot at the posts and this one he hits the posts. The Hurricanes clear the ball into touch.

11.00: Another penalty to the Blues. West lines up the kick. This one he nails. The Blues lead.

14.00: It’s still all the Blues on attack in the Hurricanes half. This time they knock on.  At the scrum the Hurricanes win a free kick against Charlie Faumuina.

16.00: The Hurricanes get some momentum as they go through 11 phases. A poor pass forces Nehe Milner-Skudder to run back and chase the ball but he does and the Hurricanes have to chip the ball upfield and into touch. The ball goes out off a Blues player.

20.00: Perenara passes to Milner-Skudder but the ball goes to ground before it gets to him. The Hurricanes recover and the ball is taken into touch and the Canes escape for now.

21.00: The Blues win the line out and attack. They go through 8 phases and get to the Hurricanes line. They go wide on the 10th phase. They get the ball to Rene Ranger who is tackled but dives over and reaches for the line. TMO decision will have to sort this one out. Wow. Brilliant. In the air being tackled but Ranger gets the ball down and scores. TRY!

23.00: West takes the conversion from out wide but misses.

25.00: The Hurricanes get some territory in the Blues 22. They win a line out and use the maul. Victor Vito slips off the side and scores. TRY!

27.00: Barrett adds the conversion.

30.00: Both teams enjoy some attacking ball but the spell ends with the ball going into touch. Hurricanes ball.

31.00: The Hurricanes (Milner-Skudder) chips the ball upfield. Perenara chases, gets the ball and slides over to score. TRY! After having to defenc for most of the match the Hurricanes now lead.

31.00: Barrett misses the conversion.

35.00: Penalty to the Hurricanes almost in front for side entry. Barrett lines up and slots the kick. That’s 15 unanswered points.

39.00:The Blues attack in the Hurricanes 22 and they look dangerous as the siren sounds but then they knock on.

Its half time.

The Blues kick off and we are underway with the second half. Mark Abbott knocks on so the Blues have a scrum in the Hurricanes half.

42.00: Penalty to the Blues. They kick for the corner and the line out.

42.00: The Blues win the line out and they use the maul. They drive for the line and George Moala scores.

43.00: West takes the conversion kick but misses.

47.00 : Penalty to the Hurricanes. Barrett takes the kick and nails it. They look a lot more like the Hurricanes of 2015.

50.00: Another penalty to the Hurricanes. Barrett lines up the kick but this one he misses. Cory Jane is on for Milner-Skudder who landed on his elbow for the Hurricanes.

52.00: The Blues concede another penalty as Akira Ioane tackles a player in the air.  The Hurricanes choose the line out.

53.00: The Hurricanes win the line out and work the ball to the Blues line. After a couple of phases they pop the ball to Perenara who slips over and scores. The TMO will have to check it though. There is smallest of knock ons by Ardie Savea in the process of scoring – so small that it might not even be a knock on. The TMO has a tough one. He says there is no knock on and the TRY is awarded.

54.00: Barrett takes the conversion but misses.

59.00: The Blues score a break away try but the try is disallowed as there was a (very small) forward pass in the build up. No try for Tevita Li this time.

64.00: The Blues work the ball into the Hurricanes 22 and then up to the line through 13 phases. They knock on but are called back for a penalty.

66.00: West lines up the kick. He nails this one.

68.00: Another penalty for the Blues. Its a long one but West nails it to cut the deficit to four.

71.00: The Hurricanes go through 13 phases but knock the ball on. They don’t appear to mind as it ate up some time.

73.00: The Blues have upped the pressure and are on the attack in the Hurricanes half. They do however concede a penalty for holding on. The Hurricanes kick for touch.

74.00: The Hurricanes keep the Blues in their half for a while but then the Blues attack down the wing. They pass the ball but it goes straight out into touch.

76.00: The Hurricanes win the ball and Perenara kicks for touch and finds it – on the Blues 5m line. The Blues win the line out and attack. Ihaia West races away after a chip kick and looks like he has the pace to score but Cory Jane stops him.

77.00: The Blues keep the ball alive in attack and the Hurricanes are scrambling but holding them out. Penalty to the Blues.

78.00: West kicks for the corner and the line out. The Blues win the line out. They try to use the maul. It rotates several times. Penalty advantage to the Blues. They play on. The Blues go wide but the pass goes to ground. We go back for the penalty.

80.00: The siren sounds after the Blues win the line out. It’s all the Blues.  They go wide. West is stopped but the attack continues. The Blues still have the advantage penalty. They play on.

81.00: The penalty comes. The Blues choose the line out. They win the line out. They set up the maul. The Hurricanes are hanging on. It’s another advantage to the Blues. This time there will be a yellow card. Vito is off.

83.00: The Blues kick for the corner again. They win the line out. The Blues use the maul again. The Hurricanes are doing everything they can to hold on. The Blues knock on.

Thats it the Hurricanes have held on to win.
