The Blues have played the Lions 19 times in Super Rugby since 1996, and the Blues have won 13 matches, lost six times.

The Blues’ 13 wins give them a record of winning 68% of their matches against the Lions regardless of venue.

  • Three of the last four Super Rugby games between the Blues and Lions have been decided by a margin of precisely three points on the day, with the South Africans picking up three wins (L1).
  • Each of the Blues’ last six Super Rugby games has been won by the away team on the day, with the Auckland side having lost both of their home games this season.
  • Leon MacDonald’s side is undefeated in their last four Super Rugby games against South African opposition (W3, D1); the last time they went longer without defeat against was a five-game win streak across the 2004 and 2005 seasons.
  • The Kiwis have had an average of two of their lineouts stolen by their opponents per game this Super Rugby season, the joint-most of any team alongside the Sharks; the Auckland side has managed one lineout steal of their own per game in reply.
  • Ivan van Rooyen’s side have had a nightmare start to this season’s tournament, losing four of their five games and they sit 13th on the Super Rugby overall standings.
  • Elton Jantjies (Lions) has made 11 kicks in play which have been retained by a team-mate this Super Rugby season, more than any other player in the competition.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

In the meantime, why not have a look at the match preview.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in Auckland at Eden Park.

2.00: Jan-Henning Campher throws, and the Lions win the first lineout. James Parsons gives away a penalty for a deliberate knock-on, no card though.

3.00: MISS! Elton Jantjies’ kick is wide. 0-0

Jantjies lines up the first kick of the afternoon. He misses away to the right. Still scoreless.

6.00: Blues on the attack and looking dangerous early on.

8.00: TRY! Rieko Ioane opens the scoring for the home team. 5-0

9.00: MISS! The conversion is no good. 5-0

11.00: Jantjies kicks to the corner after the Lions win a penalty at the ruck.

13.00: Sione Mafileo wins the turnover for the Blues; scrum to the Blues on their 5m.

14.00: Blues win the scrum, and clear to their 22m. Lions get another chance inside the Blues’ half.

16.00: TRY! The Lions launched a brutal assault the Blues’ line with a relentless 12-phase attack of pick-and-drives by the big South African pack. Marnus Schoeman went close, was halted near the line before Dan Kriel crashed over after the New Zealanders ran out of defenders. 5-all

18.00: CONVERSION! Jantjies adds the extras to put the Lions ahead. 5-7

21.00: The Blues win a penalty inside the opposition’s half after an earlier knock-on gave the home team a good field position.

22.00: PENALTY! Otere Black regains the lead for his team. 8-7

24.00: TheBlues take the 22-restart quickly, go to Ioane, who bursts down the wing before the ball is lost forward by Matt Duffie.

26.00: Jantjies boots the penalty to the corner.

28.00: OH, DEAR! The Blues counter-attack from deep through Hoskins Sotutu from a scrappy Blues’ lineout. Sotutu had a man on his outside, did not pass, and the try was lost. Jacob Pierce got a low pass that he could not handle, losing the ball forward.

30.00: Mark Talea dances through the midfield but not past the Lions’ midfield, who win the turnover, and counter-attack from their 22.

31.00: TRY! Stephen Pertefeta scores his fifth Super Rugby try after Willem Alberts lost possession in midfield. Talea broke into the 22, drew the last defender before sending the fullback over next to the posts. 13-7

32.00: CONVERSION! Black adds the extras. 15-7

34.00: Lions win the penalty, and opt to kick at goal. Very strange from the team who made penalty-goals almost extinct.

35.00: PENALTY! Jantjies cuts the gap. 15-10

36.00: The game stops to check for foul play, there is none, so we continue with a Lions scrum inside their 22m.

37.00: Reset. Penalty to the Blues!

38.00: Blues opt for a scrum rather than the points or kicking to the corner. The Blues play five phases before winning a penalty for holding at the ruck. We are checking for a deliberate knockdown by Ruan Vermaak in the lead-up.

39.00: YELLOW CARD and PENALTY TRY! Vermaak goes to the sin-bin for being offside and cynical play. 22-10

41.00: Siren sounds and Nock feeds the scrum and the Blues still want to play but Perofeta knocks on and at half time.

The halftime score was Blues 22 Lions 10

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in the City of Sails.

43.00: The Lions are under some early second-half pressure, here.

44.00: TRY! Ioane has his second after a strong run from Sotutu, and some strong running from the utility-back, who carries the defenders over the line with him. 27-10

45.00: CONVERSION! Black adds the extras.

47.00: Sam Knock is hit high, earning the hosts a penalty, which is booted into Lions territory.

49.00: TRY! Gerard Cowley-Tuioti finishes off a wonderful sweeping attack involving the backs and forwards. 34-10

50.00: CONVERSION! The kick is good; game over! 36-10

53.00: The Lions are on the Blues’ line, pounding away through the forwards before Jantjies throws a forward pass after taking the wrong option, missing a five on three to his left; instead, the flyhalf plays the ball inside, and the opportunity to save some face is lost.

56.00: We have a couple of stoppages for injuries and replacements. The home team is in full control and look like getting 50.

59.00: A knock-on kills another Blues attack; scrum to the visitors.

62.00: Nock breaks into the opposition’s half, bounces a defender before sending the ball to Duffie, who plays Talea.

63.00: TRY! The ball is shifted back inside where Duffie draws two defenders, offloads to Sotutu, who waltzes over for another try. 41-10

64.00: CONVERSION! The kick is good. 43-10

66.00: It’s all Blues at the moment.

69.00: Dalton Papalii has failed his HIA.

72.00: Lions on the attack here, they look good before losing the turnover near the chalk. This has been a dismal display from the Joburg men.

76.00: The Lions are dead on their feet, here.

78.00: NO TRY! The ball is lost forward. 43-10

79.00: Duffie jumps in the air, is hit by the defender, and his pass does not reach Talea; instead, the ball rolls out.

81.00: The hooter sounds; the Lions have the scrum inside their 22m.

82.00: Jantjies tries to attack from deep, but the ball is kicked out into touch. Game over.
