Boks make five changes to stop AB Grand Slam

South Africa have brought in five new players for Saturday’s Tri-Nations match against New Zealand in Rustenburg. Their most capped player in the current squad and highest points scorer Percy Montgomery has been dropped.

Jaque Fourie who scored two good tries last week moves from outside centre to replace Montgomery at full-back.

Jaque Fourie has played for the Cats/Golden Lions at fullback and wing but has openly said that he prefers to play at centre. When he plays out of his favourite position he usually fails to make an impact.

Wynand Olivier comes in at centre for Fourie and Andre Pretorius will start at fly-half. The back row is boosted by AJ Venter and Pedrie Wannenburg. In the front row tight-head prop BJ Botha is awarded his first cap.

Fly half Pretorius came on last week and sparked the Boks and has looked better than Butch James for the Boks on attack while his goal kicking is also fairly reliable.

Saturday’s match will be the first time the Springboks have played in Rustenburg and they are looking to break a five match losing streak. Conversely the All Blacks are enjoying a unbeaten run and are currently on 15 consecutive wins.

Should the All Blacks beat the Springboks on Saturday they will go to 16 wins. The record of 17 wins in a row is held jointly by the All Blacks and South Africa and the All Blacks would face England at Twickenham for their record equalling 17th match.

If the All Blacks win on Saturday they will also have achieved a second Grand Slam in a year having beaten the Home Nations and are currently unbeaten in the Tri nations. They also beat Argentina in Argentina earlier this year.

South Africa:

Jaque Fourie, Akona Ndungane, Wynand Olivier, Jean de Villiers, Bryan Habana, Andre Pretorius, Fourie du Preez, AJ Venter, Pierre Spies, Pedrie Wannenburg, Victor Matfield, Johann Muller, BJ Botha, John Smit (capt), Os du Randt.

Replacements: Chiliboy Ralepelle, Lawrence Sephaka, Albert van den Berg, Jacques Cronje, Ruan Pienaar, Butch James, Breyton Paulse.
