The Boland Kavaliers defeated the South Western District Eagles 38-26 in a friendly rugby match at Bredasdorp on Friday after leading 24-0 at halftime.

The Kavaliers scored five tries to three and showed much promise for the forthcoming Currie Cup competition.

Boland dominated the first half and lost some momentum when they fielded an almost new side for the second half.

The Eagles, on the other hand, strengthened their side after halftime and it paid some dividends.

Boland had a good first half and played the ball wide at almost every opportunity. This was made possible by a solid performance by the halfback pairing of Elgar Watts and Marnus Hugo.

The Boland props, Janro van Niekerk and Jacoby Adriaanse also excelled after a rather slow start. In the end they dominated the scrums.

Cheetah acquisition Jandre Blom made a huge difference to the visitors when he replaced Ricardo Croy in the second half. He brought much momentum to the team and also succeeded with three conversions.

Former Cheetah Bevin Fortuin also did well for SWD, while No 8 Junior Bester, hooker Clemen Lewis and flanker Zolani Mofu excelled for the Kavaliers.

The pointscorers are:

BOLAND – Tries: Elgar Watts, Justin Peach, Ernie Kruger, Luvo Sogidashe, Lionel Cornelius; conversions: Watts, Peach (4).

SWD – Tries: Baldwin McBean (2), Victor Joubert, Warren Malgas; conversions: Blom (3).
