The Boland Kavaliers’ medical team handed a grim report to coach Deon Davids Monday, with three of his most experienced players, centre Dewey Swartbooi, scrumhalf Marnus Hugo and hooker and captain Conrad Burke, all on the injured list.

All three players could all be sidelined for a while and will therefore not face neighbours Western Province in a Currie Cup derby at Wellington on Saturday.

Swartbooi injured knee ligaments, Hugo fractured a cheek bone, while Burke is suffering from a broken rib sustained in last Friday’s match against the Golden Lions at Wellington.

“It is sad news indeed as experience is not something you can replace overnight. Of course I would have loved to take on Western Province with my strongest side, but I suppose injuries are part of the game.

“The injured players will have to be replaced – and that gives somebody else the opportunity to play against Province.

“Hopefully the players coming in will grab the opportunity with both hands,” Davids said.

With Burke and Swartbooi out of action Boland will have to appoint their third captain of the season. Davids, however, was not prepared to say who he has got in mind to lead the Kavaliers on Saturday.

“I have a few players in mind for the job. Unfortunately I can’t say who the contenders are before everybody is cleared for the match.”
