Boland Kavaliers speedster Deon Scholtz should be ready to face the Eastern Province Mighty Elephants in a Currie Cup friendly rugby match in Port Elizabeth on Friday evening.

Scholtz returns home on Wednesday morning after a stint with the Emerging Springboks Sevens squad in Kenya.

“I am confident that Deon would travel to Port Elizabeth with us. As far as we know he is not injured,” team manager Denver Pienaar said on Monday.

Scholtz made great strides in his first Currie Cup season last year.

He is quick off the mark and has a try-scoring abillity second to none.

Scholtz should therefore be Boland’s first choice at wing when they open their Currie Cup campaign against the Leopards in Wellington on July 10.

Pienaar also said that none of the team’s squad were injured in the friendly match against the SWD Eagles at Bredasdorp last Friday and therefore they should be able to take a full-strenght squad to the Eastern Cape.

Plans to also play against the Border Bulldogs fell through.

EP’s biggest danger could come from one of their former players. Fullback Justin Peach had an outstanding game against SWD and was, according to the stand-in coach Louis Koen, “an absolute star”.

The Boland squad is expected to be announced on Wednesday morning.
