The Brumbies got back to winning ways on Good Friday by beating the Cheetahs 29 points to 23.

The Cheetahs picked up a losing bonus point in the last act of the game but missed 41 tackles indicating the size of the hill they have to climb.

The Brumbies scored four tries and therefore picked up the bonus point.

Goalkicking fullback Mark Gerrard kicked three conversions and a penalty but Gerrard limped off the field in the closing stages with a leg injury.

The Brumbies already have Wallabies stars Stirling Mortlock, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Clyde Rathbone on the sidelines.

George Smith was playing in his 100th Super rugby match.

Lock Mitchell Chapman put the game out of reach for the Cheetahs when he took a one-handed pass from Julian Salvi to score the Brumbies’ fourth try in the 64th minute.

The Cheetahs led 13-12 at halftime – flyhalf Conrad Barnard edged the South Africans in front despite the Brumbies scoring two tries to one in the opening 40 minutes.

Barnard opened the scoring with a penalty in the eighth minute before lock Mark Chisholm broke the Cheetahs defense and ran 30 meters to score in the left corner five minutes later.

Gerrard’s conversion put the Brumbies in front 7-3 lead, but the Cheetahs regained the lead with a try to winger Jongi Nokwe in the 23rd minute. Barnard added the extras to make it 10-7 before the Brumbies struck back in the 32nd minute after some strong play from halfback Josh Holmes.

From a penalty 10 meters out from the Cheetahs line, Holmes took a quick tap and spread the ball wide and No. 8 Stephen Hoiles put winger Peter Playford over in the right corner.

The Brumbies, who lost in the fifth round to the New South Wales Waratahs, have a bye next weekend.

“We improved a lot from the past week, and now we’ve got another week to recover,” said Smith. “It was a good effort all around.”

The Cheetahs have five bonus points in six losses.
