Brumbies beat Highlanders in Canberra

Last weekend the Brumbies finally showed what they can do with all of their talent. They finally fronted up. As luck would have it so did the Highlanders who comfortably beat the Waratahs at Invercargill.

We are waiting for the kick off.


The match is underway.


2.00: The Brumbies start well and get the ball into the Highlanders half but they give away a penalty.  


3.00: The Highlanders kick for touch and then they win the line out. They get the ball up to the Brumbies 25m line.


5.00: As the Highlanders work the ball forward in the Brumbies 25 Berquist knocks on and the Brumbies start their attack.


8.00: The Highlanders are doing well keeping the Brumbies pushed back in their half. The Brumbies also show some attacking skills but both teams are being let down by some basic handling errors.


9.00: The Brumbies win a penalty. They kick for touch as they need the bonus point from this match.


10.00: Brumbies win the line out. They move the ball wide but McCabe loses the ball as he is headed for the line and is tackled.


11.00: The Brumbies win a line out and they run it quickly up to the line and Elsom goes over for the first try !!


12.00: Matt Giteau takes the conversion and nails it.


15.00: Brumbies playing with more confidence. They run the ball into the Highlanders 25, they drive for the line and Salesi Ma’afu goes over. We go upstairs to check. Try !! Hoiles should get credit for that too.


16.00: Matt Giteau nails the conversion.


19.00: Brumbies still on the attack. They get up to the 5m line again. They recycle. Stephen Moore comes close, they recycle and Elsom loses the ball on his way to the posts.


22.00: Brumbies still on attack in the Highlanders 25. The Highlanders turn the ball over and boot it out.


23.00: Highlanders take a step up and as they go forward George Smith gives away a penalty. Highlanders kick for touch.


25.00: Ben Smith makes some good ground and gets the Highlanders on the front foot. The Highlanders change sides and Josh Bekhuis goes over in the corner. He does however have a hip in touch before he gets the ball down. No try.


28.00; The Highlanders get an excellent attacking position. They have a scrum in the Brumbies 25.


29.00: Highlanders recycle and go through the phases. They edge forward but the Brumbies push them back as much. As they get to the 9th phase they lose the ball forward.


33.00: The Highlanders are testing the Brumbies defence time and time again. They do however give away a scrum penalty so Valentine clears.


36.00: The Brumbies are awarded a penalty so Matt Giteau takes the kick and nails it.


39.00: The give away a penalty at the scrum. The Highlanders take the quick tap. They move forward and then the Brumbies are caught offside.


40.00: The siren goes for half time as Israel Dagg kicks the penalty and nails it.

The second half is underway.


41.00: The Highlanders give the Brumbies a little scare after Berquist chip kicked and found space behind the Brumbies but they knock on.


43.00: The Brumbies attack but the Highlanders turn it over and Cowan boots the ball downfield. Brumbies line out in their half. They run the ball into the Highlanders half and then they get pushed into touch.


47.00: Toomua makes space and passes to Elsom and he passes to Giteau who gets stopped just short, Giteau passes to Valentine who scores almost under the posts.


48.00: Giteau adds the conversion.


49.00: Israel Dagg plays the ball on the ground in the offside position so he is sent to the bin with a yellow card.


49.00: Stephen Moore comes oh-so-close to scoring but loses the ball as he hits the posts. There was a forward pass though. No try.


54.00: Highlanders work the ball into the Brumbies 25. As they go forward though they obstruct.


59.00: Highlanders win the line out. They run the ball into the Brumbies 25 and then Stephen Moore gives away a penalty. Highlanders again kick for touch. Dagg comes back on.


62.00: The Brumbies set up a line out in the Highlanders half. They get the ball up to the 25m line and the Brumbies are awarded a penalty.


64.00: The Brumbies continue to attack and they get to about 10m out. They get a scrum and they lose the ball forward on attack.


66.00: The Brumbies set up a line out in the Highlanders 25. They win the line out and have a couple of goes at the line but they are held up.


68.00: Another scrum to the Brumbies in the Highlanders 25. It gets reset. Brumbies put in again and they run the ball up to the tryline. 5m out. They change sides and Ashley-Cooper comes close but they give away a penalty.


71.00: The Brumbies keep picking away at the defence. McCabe gets close in the corner but they just cant over.


73.00: Tyrone Smith makes a load of ground but he gets stopped and the Brumbies knock on.


74.00: George Smith comes off for the Brumbies who must be getting frustrated by this Highlanders defence.


75.00: Time is running out for the Brumbies bonus point.


76.00: The Brumbies get the ball in the Highlanders half and as they run the ball they get a penalty. They go for the line out.


78.00: The Brumbies win the line out and set up the maul. Toomua darts off the back of the maul and scores the Brumbies bonus point try!!


80.00: Giteau takes the conversion from almost the touch line. He nails it perfectly.


80.10: The Highlanders restart but the ball goes out – thats it.
