The Cheetahs were comprehensively beaten 27-40 (half-time 13-13) by the Brumbies in Saturdays game at Vodacompark – a game which featured the opening of a new grand stand at the stadium.

The Brumbies showed some great signs of running rugby as they ran in four tries to the Cheetahs three.

The visitors went ahead in the fourth minute when Christian Lealiifano succeeded with a drop goal and just six minutes later the flyhalf was in action again as he jinked through the Cheetahs defence after a scrum and went over for an easy try.

Jacques-Louis Potgieter then got the Cheetahs on the board with two penalties either side of a three-pointer from Brumbies skipper Stirling Mortlock.

Just minutes before the break Springbok flyer Jongi Nokwe got the try for the Cheetahs which made matters level at 13-13.

After the break the Brumbies stepped up a gear and ran in three quick tries via Mark Gerrrard, Peter Kimlin and Josh Holmes to effectively put the result beyond any doubt.

Mortlock’s boot continued to shine as he was bang on target with all four of his conversion attempts to go with his one penalty earlier.

The Cheetahs did reply with two tries from Danwel Demas and Wayne van Heerden, but it proved too little as Mark Gerrard slotted a late drop goal and then Mortlock another penalty to make the score 27-40 which ensured the visitors went home with all five points.

Jacques-Louis Potgieter ended the match by converting Van Heerden’s try.
