Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

.00: BEEP! BEEP! We are underway in Canberra.

.00: The Rebels attacking early, but lose the ball. The Brumbies get the scrum on their 22.

.00: Both teams are searching for territory; kicking the ball away. We’ve had the full array of kicks; grubbers, up-and-unders and box-kicks.

.00: This has been a frantic start but with little skill. The game is littered with messy rucks, poor handling and bizarre kicking. The ball has been on the ground as much as it has in the air.

.00: MASSIVE SCRUM! The Brumbies forwards bulldoze the Rebels and win the penalty. It’s kicked to the corner and the lineout is about 12 metres out from the Rebels’ try-line.

.00: Good defence by the visitors, who won the penalty after the Brumbies are pinged for leaving their feet.

.00: Another small scuffle breaks out after Joe Powell is shoved in the face. Nick Briant calls the captains to give them a warning about their teams’ behaviour. Amanaki Mafi was involved in both incidents. Sam Carter calls for a shot at goal.

.00: PENALTY! Wharenui Hawera gives the Brumbies the lead.

.00: The game is still very scrappy. The teams are trying to play expansive rugby, but their passing execution is poor and handling worse. The Brumbies are penalised and Reece Hodge kicks to touch.

.00: Some poor kicking results in the Brumbies conceding a penalty near the halfway line. Hodge calls for the tee.

.00: PENALTY! Reece Hodge levels the scores at 3-all.

.00: The Brumbies are awarded a penalty and will opt for another shot at goal.

.00: PENALTY! Hawera makes no mistake from in front of the posts.

.00: The Brumbies are piling on the pressure. They have been camped on the Rebels’ try-line and are only being held back by some strong defence.

.00: TRY Jordan Smiler! The pressure told. The visitors thought they had saved the day, but an interception was turned over and the Brumbies went through two quick phases before sending the ball wide to the No 8, who strolled in for the game’s opening try.

.00: Hawera misses from out wide.

.00: The Brumbies have a scrum inside their half. The ref moves the reset scrum away from some broken up turf.

.00: The Brumbies have one last attack as the hooter sounds, but they can’t make anything of some good field position.

The half-time score was Brumbies 11 Rebels 3

.00: BEEP! BEEP! We are back underway at GIO Stadium.

.00: TRY Tevita Kuridrani! The centre takes Joe Powell’s pass at first receiver and powers over from close range.

.00: Hawera can’t miss from in front. Great start to the second half by the Brumbies.

.00: The Brumbies are camped inside the Rebels’ 22. There are three scrums before they go wide. Somehow, the visitors keep them out.

.00: It’s all Brumbies at the moment, again camped inside their opponent’s 22.

.00: TRY Wharenui Hawera! Finally, the Brumbies power their way over. The ref checks with the TMO and the try is awarded to the standoff.

.00: Hawera adds the extras. Game over.

.00: The Rebels are in some good field position. Both benches are making changes as the game enters the last quarter. The Brumbies clear with a box-kick and the Rebels attack from inside their half.

.00: Hawera puts in a little grubber, which almost finds a man on the outside, but the ball is cleared over the dead-ball line.

.00: They will have the put into the scrum on the Rebels’ 5. The move breaks down after Nigel Ah Wong knocks on.

.00: The Brumbies break down the touchline, Henry Speight, who has been immense, puts boot to ball but cannot recover as the ball goes out. Players are down all over the pitch. That is the last of Speight, as he leaves the field.

.00: The Rebels go close but are held out by some stubborn defence. The bonus-point will be crucial to the home team’s playoff chances.

.00: The game is winding down. Both teams know the end is near.

.00: TRY Nigel Ah Wong! The Brumbies overthrow their lineout, the Rebels attack but lose the ball. The ball bounces off a Rebels player and Ah Wong, who is front of the play, beats Hugh Sinclair to the rolling ball.

.00: Hawera adds the conversion. There is still time for the restart.
