Waratahs beat Brumbies in Canberra

on

Both the Brumbies and the Waratahs had their first Super Rugby bye last weekend so they will be rested but could also be a little rusty early on.

The Brumbies beat the Sharks 24-17 in their last outing while the Waratahs beat the Rebels 51-27.

  • The Brumbies have won their last three games against the Waratahs and will be searching for a fourth consecutive win against them for the first time in Super Rugby.
  • The Brumbies have won 19 of their last 23 Australian derbies on home turf, including each of their last six by an average margin of 20 points.
  • After a 51-27 win against the Rebels in Round 5, the Waratahs will be searching for back-to-back wins in Super Rugby for the first time since Rounds 14-15, 2016.
  • The Brumbies have conceded just eight clean breaks per game this season, fewer than any other team.
  • Israel Folau has made 12 offloads this campaign, the most of any player and more than twice as many as any Brumbies’ player (Lachlan McCaffrey – 5).

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in the Australian derby in Canberra.

4.00: Israel Folau is limping off after his first run. That is not good for the Waratahs.

5.00: PENALTY! Bernard Foley puts the Tahs on board. 0-3

8.00: Tevita Kuridrani plays Henry Speight, who is tackled inside the 22. But, the Brumbies get the penalty.

10.00: PENALTY! Wharenui Hawera levels the scores. 3-3

12.00: The Waratahs come straight back. Good defence keeps them out, but they do get the penalty.

14.00: MISS! Foley pulls his penalty attempt. 3-3

16.00: The Brumbies get the penalty at the scrum. Hawera puts the ball inside the Brumbies half.

17.00: Taqele Naiyaravoro almost intercepts Christian Lealiifano’s pass to Speight. He would have been away for all money if he could have held on to the ball.

19.00: Michael Hooper is pinged at the ruck and the Brumbies will take a shot at goal.

20.00: PENALTY! Hawera puts the Brumbies back in front. 3-6

21.00: Isi Naisarani is penalised for not releasing after being tackled. Boy, that is a coach-killer.

22.00: MISS! OH DEAR! Foley, who had a 96 percent kicking accuracy before today, has missed again. 3-6

24.00: Good work at the breakdown by Hooper, who tackled Andy Muirhead, got up and won the penalty.

25.00: PENALTY! Finally, Foley finds his range and levels the scores. 6-all

26.00: TRY! Lausii Taliauli finishes off a great attack. Some quick-ball from the ruck sucked in the Waratahs’ defenders. Joe Powell went left and Hawera put in a little grubber for Taliauli, who beat the cover defence to the ball. 11-6

28.00: MISS! Hawera pushes his conversion attempt. 11-6

30.00: A poor throw by Folau Fainga’a at the lineout gives the Tahs a midfield scrum.

32.00: Oh dear! Now it’s Damien Fitzpatrick who throws skew in the lineout. Scrum to the Brumbies.

33.00: The game has been a bit stop-start and played in the middle of the pitch.

35.00: Some aerial ping-pong ends with another knock on. Both teams are coming off the bye-week but look a little lethargic.

36.00: Another loose carry, this time by Kurtley Beale, sees the Waratahs cough up possession. That is the 10th turnover by the Sydney men.

38.00: Beale clears down the middle of the park. Hawera gathers and goes to the boot. The Sydney side has the ball at halfway, but are not going anywhere.

39.00: David Pockock with a steal at the breakdown – he’s back!

40.00: It’s all a bit static by both teams.

41.00: TRY! Wow! Out of nothing Taqele Naiyaravoro does Speight, on the outside and runs away to score after the hooter. It came from a turnover and a long pass from Beale to Scott Sio. The prop played Foley, who sent the winger away. 11-all

42.00: CONVERSION! Foley’s kick is in-off the post. 11-13

The half-time score was Brumbies 11 Waratahs 13

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in Canberra.

42.00: Muirhead knocks a high-ball forward, gifting the Waratahs an attacking scrum.

43.00: TRY! Naiyaravoro gets his second. It came from a wonderful offload and wrap-around between Foley and Alex Newsome, who played Naiyaravolo in for the score. 11-18

45.00: MISS! Another missed kick by the Wallaby standoff. 11-18

48.00: The Waratahs are pinged for taking out the jumper in the lineout. It was Rob Simmons on Rory Arnold. Harewa calls for the tee.

49.00: PENALTY! Hawera reduces the deficit. 14-18

52.00: After several phases, Speight wins the penalty at the ruck, halting another Brumbies attack.

52.00: Tom Banks’ banana kick is poor, gifting the Waratahs easy possession.

53.00: The Tahs win a penalty, and Foley kicks to the corner; the visitors are on the charge.

56.00: Pocock’s return to Super Rugby (after 617 days) has been excellent; he already has two turnovers at the breakdown.

59.00: Still a lot of mistakes being made.

61.00: Daryl Gibson, the Waratahs coach, will be fuming with their ball handling.

62.00: Lachlan McCaffrey is pinged for entering the ruck, illegally. Foley clears to halfway.

63.00: The Waratahs call for the kicking tee.

65.00: PENALTY! Foley slots the penalty-goal. 14-21

68.00: a bit of a break in play for injuries.

70.00: The Brumbies are awarded a penalty near halfway and will take a shot.

71.00: PENALTY! Big kick by Hawera. It was from 50 metres out but sailed over. 17-21

72.00: Speight tackles Beale – his Wallaby room-mate – very late, and he is rightly penalised. Foley will call for the tee, looking to give his team another seven-point lead.

73.00: MISS! Foley hits the upright for the third time, tonight. 17-21

76.00: Big scrum from the visitors, winning the scrum-penalty inside the Brumbies’ 22. They will take another shot at goal.

77.00: PENALTY! Foley, finally, finds his range. He becomes the youngest – and eighth – Australian to pass 800 Super Rugby points. 17-24

79.00: The Brumbies have an attacking lineout inside the Tahs’ 22. They go to the driving maul, but it is sacked.

80.00: Advantage being played to the home team. The hooter has sounded. They kick to the corner.

81.00: The Waratahs hang on for only their fourth win in Canberra after collapsing the maul, legally.

FULL-TIME.
