It was thrill a minute stuff at the Border Rugby Stadium on Friday night, where the Border Bulldogs went down 11-10 to the Eagles in their Currie Cup first division match.

The Bulldogs had a golden chance at the death to salvage the game but the final pass by wing Luckan Gafoer was knocked on with an open line ahead. It was a tight opening 24 minutes with each side sharing a penalty but with Jeffrey Taljard just short with a long range effort.

The Bulldogs lost turnover ball near the Eagles’ tryline, enabling the Eagles to break free, then they lost possession again a few minutes later, placing themselves under needless pressure and losing valuable momentum

The Bulldogs worked hard to stay on the attack in the final seven minutes of the half but were guilty of not finishing amongst the backs. Finally it was left to centre Taljard to dive over for a converted try three minutes short of halftime following a ruck for a 10-3 lead.

It wasn’t over as flyhalf Gaffie du Toit then broke away deep in his own half feeding eighthman Schalk van der Merwe whose pass was knocked on near the tryline.

The key to the second half lay with the Bulldogs pack who gave a decent first half display and were prepared to chase and tackle hard and they certainly came to the party.

The Eagles attacked from the start of the second half, with an unconverted try going to fullback Bobby Joubert. By this stage the pace of the game was frantic and it remained so for the rest of the half as each side sought the knockout blow.

Flanker Dumisani Meslane set the stadium alight with a terrific run and Gaffie du Toit was just wide with a long range drop attempt.

Something had to give and it did when Blom kicked a penalty for the Eagles to take a one point lead at 11-10 with 15 minutes remaining. In the final seven minutes both teams were desperate to score, the Bulldogs doing most of the attacking.

They were awarded an angled penalty but it was pushed wide by Reinhardt Gerber. Just when it looked all over the Bulldogs ran the ball right only for the winning chance to be thrown away.
