Bulls beat Highlanders in Pretoria

If playing the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld wasn’t hard enough the Highlanders have made their work even tougher by suspending Adam Thomson and Michael Hobbs who is still the Super14’s leading point scorer.

We are waiting for the kick off.

 

Israel Dagg kicks off and we are underway.

 

2.00: The Highlanders start well and keep the ball in play but the Bulls stop them and  knock on goes in 10m from the Bulls line.

 

3.00:After a scrum the Bulls get a kick so they clear and we have have a line out almost on the Highlanders 25m line.

 

5.00: The Bulls get control of  the ball and after about six phases Kirchner puts the ball on his boot but it goes out.

 

Danie Rossouw makes a break and he takes the support with him, the Bulls then swing the ball through a couple of players and then Kirchner passes out to Gary Botha who is on the wing and he darts off to score the first try of the match.

 

6.00:Morne Steyn adds the conversion.

 

8.00: The Bulls simply swing the ball through the phases and the Highlander drop off a couple of tackles and Francois Hougaard darts through to score the Bulls second try.

 

9.00: Steyn adds the conversion again.

 

10.0 Stats show the Highlanders have had to make 15 tackles and missed 9 so far.  

 

12.00: The Highlanders start to hold on to the ball and it pays off as they run the ball into the Bulls half. The Bulls however turn the ball over and the pass to Gerhard vd Heever who darts off beating Fetu’u Vainikolo to score the Bulls third try.

 

13.00:Steyn takes the conversion and nails it from the touch line.

 

16.00: The Bulls move the ball through the phases and after six phases the Highlanders turn the ball over and Schoemark boots it to safety.

 

17.00: The Highlanders respond. The Bulls fumble a ball and Israel Dagg shows a good turn of pace to beat Bulls wing Stephan Dippenaar to the tryline and scores the Highlanders first try.

 

18.00: Matt Berquist nails the conversion.

 

21.00: Problems start to creap into the scrum and we have a numbe rof resets. Eventually the Bulls get the ball out but they kick forward and then knock on in the regather.

 

24.00: The Bulls retain the ball and they move it out through the line and Wynand Olivier gets the pass and darts off to score the Bulls bonus point try.

 

25.00: Steyn misses the conversion.

 

27.00: Steven Stephano and Morne Steyn get a talking to by the referee for aggessive play.

 

28.00: The Bulls take a quick -short line out and Gary Botha puts in a grubber behind the defence but the Highlanders get to the ball first and take control.

 

30.00: The Highlanders clear but Steyn boots it back and Dagg fails to control the ball but a couple of Bulls are there to regather and Pierre Spies flies off and scores under the posts.

 

31.00: Morne Steyn adds the conversion.

 

The Highlanders (Dagg) find space in the Bulls defence but Dagg passes to Setephano who loses it.

 

33.00: Spies darts off the back of the scrum but gets brought to ground and gives away a penalty for not releasing.

 

36.00: Gurthr’ Steenkamp gives away a penaly for offside so the Highlanders go for the line out which they win and work the ball wide. They get the ball to within 3m but they are called back as Potgieter was offside.

 

37.00: Gurthr’ Steenkamp comes off the field and the Bulls lose the first scrum without him and Romans comes off the back of the scrum and passes to Dagg who darts over for his second try.

 

38.00: Matt Berquist nails the conversion.

 

The Bulls get a penalty from the half way line so Steyn bangs it over as the siren sounds. It’s half time.

 

The half time score was Bulls 36 Highlanders 14

 

The second half is underway.

 

42.00: The Bulls try the up and under and Wynand Olivier chases but the Highlanders get back and secure the ball.

 

44.00: There seems to be a lack of urgency in the opening stages of the second half. The Bulls give away a penalty after a line out and Dagg clears the ball.

 

46.00: The Highlanders swing the ball to the backline and they show some great running skills but the ball to Dagg goes to ground and the opportunity is lost.

 

47.00: Well, it’s all the Highlanders as they put the Bulls under pressure. They get to within 4m and recycle. 9 phases. Then 10, Dagg goes for the line.

 

48.00:Bulls give away a penalty for not rolling away. Highlanders want the scrum. They win it and then they send the ball to Vainikolo but he gets caught. Dagg has a run and the Highlanders have another couple of goes and then a Bulls boot gets to the ball as Kirchner clears.

 

50.00: Second half possession is 78 per cent in favour of the Highlanders. Francois Hougaard goes high for a tackle and goes down hard. Kuun comes off for blood. It’s starting to get sticky for the Bulls as they only have two back line players on the bench and Jacques-Louis Potgieter is already on – Spies can double as wing though. Steyn comes off as well. 

 

53.00:The Highlanders set up a line out in the Bulls half. They win the line out and open up the defence in the middle and then Shoemark sends a big long pass to Tim Boys who eases in for the third try in the corner.

 

54.00: Matt Berquist nails the conversion as the Bulls seem to have lost momentum and interest.

 

57.00: Bronson Murray comes on for Chris King. The Bulls set up a line out. Steyn comes back on and  Jacques-Louis Potgieter goes off. The Bulls set up a maul and  F Hougaard bust through the defence to score his second try.

 

60.00: Steyn adds the conversion.

 

62.00: Vainikolo comes off and is replaced by James Paterson.

 

68.00: There is a hold up for injury. The game resumes and James Paterson combines with  Robbie Robinson and  Robinson goes in to score the Highlanders bonus point try. Great try and a great display of pace.

 

70.00: Israel Dagg nails the conversion.

 

72.00: The Bulls are coming back a but into the match now. Taking nothing away from the Highlanders come back but the Bulls have been off the boil this half.

 

73.00: The Bulls work the ball up to the Highlanders 25 but Jacques-Louis Potgieter knocks on. We come back for a penalty for the Bulls. They tap and go and after a couple of phases Jaco van der Westhuyzen goes over the line. We have to go upstairs to see if he got the ball down. The ball is held up. Bulls 5m scrum.

 

74.00: Spies picks up the ball at the back of the scrum and runs 5m forward to score a very easy try.

 

75.00: Morne Steyn adds the conversion and thats another 50 for the Bulls.

 

78.0: The Highlanders look to end on a high and Israel Dagg bags his third try. He converts his own try.

 

The Bulls look to also finish on a high but Matfield’s pass is too fancy and the ball goes to ground.

 

Thats it. Kaplan blow his whistle for full time.
