The already disastrous Super 14 campaign of the Bulls took another body blow with the news that captain and scrumhalf Fourie du Preez will not be available to play for the Bulls against the Highlanders on Saturday.

Du Preez’s injury was confirmed by Bulls team doctor Tommie Smook who said that Du Preez had suffered a bruised bone in his hand and that he would be sitting out this weekend as a precautionary measure.

“Fourie has some bruising on a bone in his hand and as a precaution we have decided that he will sit out this weekend and give his hand time to heal properly,” said Smook on IOL.

“Fourie has been playing with that injury for the past three weeks or so and we decided to make the call to give him time off to get it right,” said Bulls coach Frans Ludeke.

It has also been revealed that the Bulls are trying to get young scrumhalf Francois Hougaard back from France where he is touring with the SA under-20 squad.

“Francois was with us on tour so he knows our drills and has trained with the side,” said Ludeke.

“It will be good for him to get a chance but he will start from the bench.”

Du Preez was not the only player who sat on the sidelines as Ludeke put his charges through a fitness orientated practice session.

Springbok flank Wikus van Heerden looks set to take over as captain for the Highlanders match.
