Still reeling from their shocking display and an almost unthinkable defeat of 40-8 against the Reds on Saturday, the Bulls are now holding thumbs that Bryan Habana, captain Fourie du Preez and Wilhelm Steenkamp will be fit for Saturday’s match against the Chiefs in Waikato.

Habana injured his shoulder against the Reds, Du Preez is struggling with his hand and lock Steenkamp was replaced at half-time following a chest injury.

The medical team is working around the clock to get the players back on the field, but coach Frans Ludeke did not want to speculate whether the players will be available for the Chiefs match.

“I am optimistic the three players will recover in time,” Ludeke said on Monday.

“We want to select our strongest team for the game against the Chiefs because we must get back on the winning track.

Meanwhile reserve hooker James van der Walt, who injured his hamstring late in the match against the Reds, has flown back to South Africa.

Bandise Maku is on his way to Australia to replace him and will certainly be on the bench on Saturday.

Suspended fullback Zane Kirchner is also on his way to Australia to link up with the team, although he will only be allowed to play against the Blues the following weekend.
