Bulls beat Jaguares in Pretoria

The Bulls have returned from Singapore and this week they host the Jaguares in Pretoria where they will be hoping to end a seven-match winning streak for the Argentina side.

A victory of any kind this weekend would move the Jaguares into the top spot in the South African Super Rugby conference as the Lions are not playing.

  • The Jaguares have won two of their previous three games against the Bulls, including a 54-24 victory when they met less than two months ago.
  • The Bulls have led at half-time in each of their last five games on home turf; however, they’ve gone on to win only three of those five games.
  • The Jaguares have won their last four games on the bounce away from home, as many as they had won in all their 17 prior games on the road.
  • The Bulls (91%) boast the best lineout success rate of any team in the competition this season, five percentage points greater than the Jaguares.
  • Guido Petti Pagaizaval has stolen 11 lineouts for the Jaguares this campaign, the second most of any player in the competition behind the Lions’ Franco Mostert (13).

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in Pretoria.

3.00: The Jaguares have an attacking lineout inside the Bulls 22.

3.00: TRY! Nicolas Sanchez sees the space, runs around a defender, steps inside and beats three more Bulls to roll over and score. 0-5

4.00: MISS! Sanchez can’t add the extras. 0-5

5.00: TRY! Pablo Matera scores under the posts taking Bertranou’s pass after Javier Ortega Desio’s midfield break. The Bulls are under the pump. 0-10

6.00: CONVERSION! Sanchez won’t miss from in front. 0-12

8.00: Another penalty goes against the home team. Sanchez kicks to the opposition’s 22. It’s all orange at the moment.

9.00: The Bulls get a reprieve after a poor lineout by the South Americans.

11.00: The Bulls are unable to build phases. They need to calm down and keep the ball in hand.

14.00: The Jaguares run the ball out from behind their goal-line and get to halfway. They put boot to ball and the Bulls gather. Embrose Papier puts in a box-kick and the home team get the ball back for a scrum.

16.00: Another move breaks down after a stray pass by the Blue Bulls. At least they are getting their big ball carriers in the game. RG Snyman and Jason Jenkins will need to match Guido Petti, Matera and Ortega Desio if they are to stand a chance.

18.00: Bulls lose the ball again and give away a penalty for “no arms in the tackle.”

19.00: TRY! Gonzalo Bertranou is put away by Tomas Lezana after Sanchez’s mini-break opened up space behind the defence. Scintillating by the Argentinians. 0-17

20.00: CONVERSION! Sanchez adds the two. 0-19

22.00: TRY! Johnny Kotze is over for the Bulls’ first. Warrick Gelant found the space, ran the outside space, played Jamba Ulengo, who drew the defenders and played Kotze on the inside. 5-19

23.00: CONVERSION! Handre Pollard slots the kick. 7-19

25.00: Emiliano Boffelli is cutting the Bulls up. The winger is rounding players, slipping tackles causing havoc with the ball in hand. Wonderful play by the utility back.

27.00: MISS! Sanchez misses a penalty from in front. 7-19

29.00: Super counter-rucking by the Bulls forwards earns them a penalty. Pollard kicks the ball out inside the opposition’s 22.

31.00: Another promising attack comes to nought for the South Africans after Sanchez strips the ball and clears down the field.

32.00: Divan Rossouw is pinged for a neck-role and very lucky not to be sent to the bin. Not sure what the TMO Johan Greeff is doing because that is yellow.

33.00: Jaguares pinged for a late tackle. The Bulls look good when attacking, but they can’t find the final pass. Pollard kicks to the corner.

34.00: Yet another poor lineout leads to a turnover in the red zone. You cannot get your driving maul going if you lose your own throw.

35.00: TRY! Papier ducks a tackle and is in for the Bulls’ second try. The TMO is checking for a forward pass from Hanro Liebenberg, but the officials ruled the ball went backwards. 12-19

36.00: CONVERSION! Pollard reduces the Jaguares’ lead. 14-19

37.00: The Jaguares are playing at a pace the Bulls can’t keep up with.

38.00: A promising attack ends with a pass into touch. The Bulls got away with that.

39.00: Bautista Delguy is pushed into touch by Liebenberg. Players are down and others have their hands on their heads, puffing in the thin Highveld air.

40.00: Papier’s kicking has been poor, just giving the ball away. Boffelli breaks and sets up good attacking position for his side. Somehow, the Bulls’ rush defence saves the day. Liebenberg wins the penalty at the ruck and Pollard clears.

41.00: Pollard does not find touch, but it does not matter, Kriel steals a wayward pass and races away under the poles. 19-all

42.00: CONVERSION! Pollard puts his team ahead at the break. What a half! Phew!

The halftime score was Bulls 21 Jaguares 19

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in South Africa.

43.00: Boffelli knocks on and it hits a team-mate, giving the Bulls a reprieve. Pollard calls for the tee. The distance is about 55 metres, which is no problem on the Highveld.

44.00: PENALTY! Pollard’s kick sails above the top of the poles and is good. 24-19

46.00: TRY! Boffelli with another great run sets up Bertranou for his second try. 24-all

47.00: CONVERSION! Sanchez puts his team back in front in this topsy-turvy game. 24-26

49.00: Bulls win a penalty and Pollard will kick to the 22.

52.00: TRY! Ulengo is over in the corner after Pollard’s linebreak sets up the winger. The Bok flyhalf ghosted through a big gap, similar to Sanchez’s first-half try, and sends a wonderful pass to Ulengo. 29-26

53.00: MISS! The ball rebounds off the upright. 29-26

56.00: Another penalty at the ruck for the Bulls. A player is down receiving treatment and allowing the players a break.

57.00: TRY! Marco van Staden breaks free and bounces Bertranou away on his way over the whitewash. 34-26

58.00: CONVERSION! Pollard adds another two. 36-26

60.00: We are entering the stage where the altitude takes effect on the touring players.

62.00: The Jaguares have a Munroe to climb. Tomas Lavanini over-rules Matera and opts to kick at goal.

63.00: PENALTY! Boffelli slots the penalty and makes it a one-score game. 36-29

64.00: The bulls look dangerous with their attacks, finding holes at will.

65.00: TRY! Ulengo is over for his second. Kotze’s run, beating defenders, set-up the score. 41-29

66.00: CONVERSION! Pollard hits another through the sticks. 43-29

68.00: The visitors are tiring and struggling to find any holes in the Blue wall.

71.00: The Bulls have been superb since the 20th-minute and deserve this hard-fought win.

73.00: Jaguares are throwing everything at the Bulls, but they turnover possession and the home team have the scrum.

75.00: Massive scrum by the Bulls earns them a penalty.

76.00: MISS! Pollard pulls his kick wide. Strange because it was in front. 43-29

78.00: The game is scrappy as both teams throw caution to the wind.

80.00: The Jaguares mount one last attack.

81.00: The hooter sounds as the orange wave enters the Bulls’ 22.

82.00: TRY! Matera gets another. The Bulls are offsides. The Jaguares went quickly, looking for a losing bonus-point.

83.00: HUGE MISS! Boffelli’s kick rebounds off the post and the losing bonus-point goes begging. 43-34

Game over.
