Bulls beat Reds in Pretoria




The Bulls have played the Reds 19 times in Super Rugby since 1998; the Bulls have won eight matches, drawn none and lost 11 times.

The Blue Bulls’ eight wins out of 19 matches, which is 42% of their games against the Reds regardless of venue.

3.00: The Bulls and the Reds can go second in their respective conferences with a win, today.

4.00: TRY! Lizo Gqoboka crashes over from close range. Burger Odendaal’s break and offload to Jaco Visagie set-up the score. The Bulls bossed the gain line, and have their reward. 5-3

6.00: MISS! Pollard pushes his kick, wide. 5-3

9.00: The game is open, both sides attacking wide, but it’s the Bulls with most of the territory and possession.

10.00: The Bulls have an attacking lineout on the Reds’ 22.

11.00: The ball is carried back by Hamish Stewart for a Bulls’ five-metre scrum after Warrick Gelant’s grubber turned the Australian three-quarters.

12.00: A big scrum by the home pack is only rewarded with another scrum; it looked a penalty to the Bulls but Glen Jackson gave the Aussies a reprieve.

13.00: The scrum is reset.

14.00: Jack Hardy is caught offsides. Pollard calls for the tee for a kick from in front of the posts.

15.00: PENALTY! Pollard extends his side’s lead. 8-3

17.00: The Reds win a penalty after a scrum on halfway. Hegarty boots the ball deep into opposition territory.

18.00: A knock on kills a good opportunity for the Australians. Scrum to the hosts inside their 22.

20.00: Another strong run by Odendaal gets him over the gain line. The Bulls get to their 10-metre line but lose the ball in contact after Jesse Kriel is smashed in a double tackle.

21.00: JP Smith collapses the scrum. Pollard kicks to the opposition’s 22, and the Bulls are in good position to go to their maul.

23.00: NO TRY! A beautifully worked move by Pollard and Gelant ends with Jade Stighling dotting down in the corner, however, the referee goes to the TMO, who rules out the score for a knock on. 8-3

24.00: Both teams have made too many handling errors for this early in the game. The Bulls’ fourth costs them five points. The Reds win a scrum-penalty because of some illegal scrumming by the South Africans.

26.00: No contest by the Bulls at the lineout. The Reds like to use their centres for crash-ball in midfield. They go wide after the initial attack but lose the ball forward in contact. The Bulls win the turnover and pin the Reds inside their 22 where they transgress.

27.00: Pollard kicks to the corner.

28.00: TRY! Marco van Staden crashes over for his third Super Rugby try after a powerful rolling maul. The Bulls split immediately to the right and used their legs in a three on two to drive over. Stewart’s ill-discipline has cost his side. 13-3

29.00: MISS! Pollard can’t curl his touchline kick inside the poles. 13-3

31.00: Ivan van Zyl clears with an excellent box-kick.

32.00: Van Staden is penalised for going off his feet at the breakdown. Hegarty pins the Bulls inside their 22.

34.00: The Reds knock on allowing the hosts to counter-attack from deep. Some slick handling by RG Snyman were sublime, leading to another breakdown penalty for the Bulls. Pollard kicks deep.

35.00: Oh dear! Van Zyl is sloppy at the base of the driving maul, knocking on and killing the attack.

36.00: Just like earlier in the half, the visitors win a scrum-penalty on their 5m. Hegarty puts the ball out on his 10m.

38.00: Tate McDermott intercepts and runs to the Bulls’ 22. Hardy is in support but the ball is turned over at the ruck. Pote Human’s men counter, although they also lose the ball forward, Johnny Kotze is the guilty party.

40.00: The scrum is taking a while to be set because of an injury. A big scrum by the Blue Bulls earns them possession after McDermott’s mistake at the base.

41.00: Gqoboka gives away a needless penalty for not scrumming straight. The Reds go quickly and are already up to the 22.

43.00: Samu Kerevi is tackled out, but the ref is checking for foul play at the previous ruck by Stewart for cleaning out without using his arms. Just a penalty. Pollard kicks to touch for one last attack.

44.00: The Bulls are using their ball carriers to march up the field, but Van Staden loses the ball forward.

55.00: Queensland collapse the scrum, so Pollard kicks to the Reds’ 10m. The hosts are dominating the set-pieces.

58.00: TRY! A fantastic build-up leads to Lukhan Salakaia-Loto putting Kerevi away for the Reds’ first try of the match. 20-8

59.00: CONVERSION! Hegarty adds the extras. 20-10

60.00: TRY! Hanro Liebenberg strikes for the Bulls after some wonderful interplay by the home team after the restart. 25-10

61.00: CONVERSION! Pollard adds the extras. 27-10

63.00: A long series of plays has the Bulls camped inside the Reds’ 22.

64.00: TRY! Jade Stighling gets his second Super Rugby try. He gathered Pollard’s accurate kick and crashed over in the corner. Game over! 32-10

65.00: MISS! The skipper slips as he takes the kick and the ball sails wide. 32-10

68.00: Queensland has a rare attack inside the Bulls’ 22.

69.00: TRY! Kerevi has his second after some sustained pressure inside the 22. He ran hard and straight and the Saffas could not stop him. 32-15

69.00: CONVERSION! Hegarty adds another two. 32-17

72.00: The hosts win another scrum-penalty. This time they opt for another scrum instead of the lineout.

74.00: Mr Jackson’s had enough, he penalises the new Pretoria front row for collapsing.

75.00: The Bulls are bashing away at the tourists, but another loose pass is not collected. Scrum to Queensland.

78.00: The Reds go through the phases, but they are not generating quick ball, which leads to a Bulls penalty.

80.00: The hooter sounds with the Reds on the attack, they are trying to deny the home side a bonus-point. the ball is kicked away and into touch.
