Bulls beat Stormers in Pretoria

The Bulls have played the Stormers 30 times in Super Rugby since 1998, the Bulls have won 11 and lost 18.

There was one draw between the sides in 2000.

  • The Stormers have won seven of their last nine games against the Bulls, earning a losing bonus point in one of their two defeats in that time.
  • The Bulls have led at half-time in three of their last four games; however, they’ve gone on to win only once in that time.
  • The Stormers lost all three South African derbies played away from home during the 2018 campaign, including a 33-23 loss to the Bulls.
  • Only the Sunwolves (89%) had a better goal kicking accuracy rate last season than the Bulls (84%), while the Stormers kicked at a conversion rate of 81%.
  • Hundred Pollard (Bulls) missed just eight kicks at the goal last season, the fewest of any player to kick more than 50 (53/61 goals).

Match detail

We are waiting for the kickoff.

Not long to go; both teams are walking out at Loftus to continue this famous rivalry.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in Pretoria.

3.00: Dillyn Leyds takes Embrose Papier’s box-kick and the Stormers attack on halfway; The kicking game will be important on the Highveld.

4.00: TRY! Simply sensational from Blitzbokke legend Rosko Specman, who left Leyds and Wilco Louw for dead with a devastating sidestep. It came from a turnover at the lineout. Specman had to gather Jesse Kriel’s poor pass before cutting back inside and racing away for a score on debut. Wow! 5-0

5.00: CONVERSION! Handré Pollard adds the two. 7-0

7.00: Specman smokes Leyds with a big tackle. The Bulls win the penalty, but not their lineout. It’s a pulsating derby. Phew!

9.00: Schalk Brits is caught offsides, the advantage is not taken, however, referee Jaco Peyper calls Lood de Jager and warns him about repeated infringements. SP Marais calls for the tee.

10.00: PENALTY! Marais makes no mistake from in front. 7-3

12.00: Warrick Gelant’s accurate grubber rolls out into touch inside the opposition’s 22.

13.00: De Jager steals another opposition lineout and the Bulls attack near the goal line.

14.00: ‘Rooi Rok Bokkie’ blasts out around this famous old ground. Unbelievable, but expect all the treffers, this evening.

17.00: The Bulls got scrummed, and so they decided on the lineout, especially with the way the Stormers is struggling in the set piece.

19.00: TRY! Another scintillating try from Specman. What a start to his Super Rugby career. The flyer stepped another prop and put on the afterburners. He was stopped short but got up to dot down. Wow! 12-3

20.00: CONVERSION! Pollard knocks over the easy kick. 14-3

23.00: Loftus – and South Africa – holds its breath because Specman is down.

24.00: He’s back up, to the cheers of the home crowd.

25.00: TRY! Johnny Kotze is away after some spectacular work by Brits, who sold a dummy, danced through two defenders like Dan Carter before some hands saw the winger beat his man and score. 19-3

26.00: CONVERSION! Pollard adds the extras. 21-3

27.00: Springboks and Stormers skipper Siya Kolisi, is down.

30.00: The Stormers are looking to get back into the contest; the Bulls are chasing well, flying into tackles and flooding the breakdown. Sjoe!

32.00: Stormers get a lineout inside the Bulls’ 22. No contest by the hosts, so the Cape side set up the drive.

33.00: BIG DEFENCE from the Bulls, who get hands on the ball and hold the ball up once Peyper calls maul. Superb.

35.00: Been a couple of reset scrums, this one is no different. The scrum disintegrates, but the ref allows play to continue. Bulls clear through Papier.

36.00: Brits is off. On comes Cornell Els; that was some cameo from the former Saracens hooker

37.00: Duane Vermeulen is having a game, carrying with conviction and making the big hits.

39.00: De Jager has been Captain Fantastic – in-joke for those who don’t know about the new South African kits – dominating the Stormers’ lineout, stealing two. He’s been a wrecking machine alongside Vermeulen.

40.00: This was some half of rugby by the Bulls. They take a deserved 18-point lead into the break.

The halftime score was Bulls 21 Stormers 3

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in Pretoria. The Bulls were sensational in the first half: Can they keep it up, or will their old nemesis the Stormers, find a way back? Bulls blew hot and cold in most matches last season, so we’ll see.

43.00: Leyds tries to run out of his half, is hauled down before Damian Willemse boots clear.

44.00: Both sides are kicking behind the wings and into the space near the sidelines. Eddie Jones is clearly having an effect in the southern hemisphere, still.

45.00: TRY! Pollard combines with Kriel for the simplest of tries; It was well thought out, well worked and well executed by the two Springboks. The flyhalf saw the space and lofted a kick into the space behind the Stormers’ backs and into Kriel’s arms. Gorgeous play. 26-3

46.00: CONVERSION! Pollard makes it four from four. 28-3

49.00: The Stormers are struggling, here. They cannot stop this rampant Bulls outfit.

51.00: PENALTY! Pollard extends his side’s lead with another successful shot at goal. 31-3

53.00: NO TRY! Specman chases his kick, beating in a defender in the foot race, however, there was a knock on in the build-up so no hat-trick for the flyer.

54.00: Louw is confused as he is penalised by Peyper. It looked harsh, and maybe the penalty should have gone to the visitors.

55.00: PENALTY! Pollard, from long-range strikes long, and strikes true. 34-3

64.00: Stormers opt for a scrum. The Bulls have broken their spirits.

66.00: Stormers are looking to build through the phases; they need a try – anything.

68.00: Time for the rest of the benches to be emptied.

71.00: The penalties are mounting for the visitors. Pollard wants another crack from distance.

72.00: PENALTY! That’s seven from seven for the No 10: An exhibition.

75.00: De Jager leaves the field to Stormers, tonight.

76.00: They have been dismantled in every department.

78.00: PENALTY! Pollard is taking the Mickey, now. Eight from eight.

80.00: What a performance from Pote Human’s men, simply devastating. It’s not often you serve up a forty burger to your fiercest rival.
