Generally matches between the Bulls and the Cheetahs are a step up from the regular South African derbies.

These two teams contested the Currie Cup final last year and it was not the run away most expected.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick off.

The match is underway.

1.00: The Cheetahs make the perfect start and blow the Bulls apart and du Preez loses the ball and Lionel Mapoe scores in under half a minute !! Just checked on that score it was 20 seconds ! We will need to check but that could be the fastest ever Super rugby try.

2.00 Naas Olivier misses the conversion.

3.00:  The Bulls start to slow the ball down and get their game going wearing down the defence.

6.00: The Cheetahs give away a penalty so Morne Steyn takes the shot and he just sneaks it in between the posts.

10.00; The Bulls give away a penalty so Naas Olivier takes a shot at goal and nails it.

13.00: Bulls start to get some momentum going but the Cheetahs are doing pretty well in slowing them down.

15.00: Fourie du Preez fires the ball out the back of the scrum to Jaco Pretorius who dodges one tackle and runs on to score the Bulls first try.

16.00: Morne Steyn slots the conversion and the Bulls lead.

17.00: The Bulls almost immediately give away a penalty and Naas Olivier slots the penalty and the Cheetahs lead again.

19.00: The Cheetahs give away a penalty this time so Morne Steyn takes another shot and again nails it.

21.00: Jongi Nokwe fires through the Bulls defence and scores for the Cheetahs…..or does he. It looks like he was held up. We go upstairs. TMO says no try.

24.00: Momentum is all with the Cheetahs now. They string together phase after phase. Pedrie Wannenburg gives away a penalty so Olivier will have a shot at goal. He strikes it well and puts the Cheetahs into the lead.

30.00: Bulls drive the ball up to the tryline. The Cheetahs hold them with some magnificent defence. Cheetahs turn it over and then clear.

33.00: The Cheetahs defence is fantastic today. The Bulls are working away and getting almost nowhere. But things have to break sometime and the Cheetahs defence finally cracks and Morne Steyn finds a gap and scores the try !

36.00: Steyn converts his try and the Bulls lead by 6.

39.00: The Cheetahs give away a penalty at the scrum. Steyn bangs it over from about 40m out. Bulls lead by 9.

40.00: Kaplan blows for half time.

The half time score was Cheetahs 14 Bulls 23

The second half is underway.

43.00: The Cheetahs are awarded a penalty so Naas Olivier takes the kick and nails it – curled it in nicely.

44.00: The Bulls break away after the restart and Gerhard van den Heever gets the ball on the wing and flies in for the Bulls third try.

45.00: Morne Steyn bangs over the conversion from almost the corner flag.

47.00: Danie Rossouw puts the ball on his boot and kicks the ball downfield – Zane Kirchner chases and just beats the ball to the line for the first bonus point try of 2010.

48.00: Steyn adds the conversion.

49.00: Well the Cheetahs are not giving up and Juan Smith drives for the line and reaches through opposition legs to score another try.

50.00: Naas Olivier adds the conversion.

52.00: Well its all th Cheetahs now. They swing the ball through the team and then out to Jongi Nokwe who shows some pace and score the Cheetahs third try !

53.00: Naas Olivier adds the conversion again.

55.00: Oh my word …. this is a first. Pierre Spies darts away and the lights all go out ! No one can see a thing !

Ok so the game is going to be held up for a bit while they get the lights back on. This is what we call the “New South Africa”. Ok they have the lights back on but the game has not restarted yet. Let’s hope this does not happen in the world cup later this year. Not all the lights are back on but the game resumes.

55.00: The Bulls restart with a scrum and they fire the ball out to Wynand Olivier who blasts over for the try. Morne Steyn adds the conversion.

58.00: The Bulls give away a penalty so Naas Olivier has another shot at goal and adds three points even though the lights are not all on.

The Cheetahs build up and throw everything at the Bulls. The Bulls turn it over and Steyn boots it back and the Cheetahs go for a drop goal and miss.

66.00: The Bulls realise they are not out of the woods and continue to bash away looking to score more points.

68.00: Pierre Spies gains some ground for the Bulls but Juan Smith also gets back and secures the ball for the Cheetahs. After some scrappy play the Bulls are awarded a penalty.

69.00: Morne Steyn kicks for posts and misses.

73.00: Wynand Olivier limps off the field. Doesn’t look too serious though.

75.00: It looks like nothing is on for the Bulls but Gerhard van den Heever drives for the line and takes Danwel Demas with him and drives over the line. We go upstairs to see if he scored. He was held up.

76.00: The Bulls get a scrum 5m out. The Bulls drive forward but referee Kaplan darts off and awards a penalty try.

78.00; Former Cheetah Jacques-Louis Potgieter converts the try.

80.00: Jonathan Kaplan blows for full time – thats it the Bulls win handsomely.

The final score is Cheetahs 34 Bulls 51
