Boland rugby coach Deon Davids sprang a surprise when he named regular hooker Conrad Burke as a flanker for Saturday’s friendly match against the Stormers in Wellington.

Burke has played on the flank before, but is regarded in many circles as too small. He is, however, fast off the mark and will undoubtedly speed things up for the home side in the loose department.

Except for loosehead powerhouse Janro van Niekerk, Boland will field a full strentgh side. Van Niekerk will start from the bench after injurying his ankle late last season.

Experienced fullback Justin Peach will also get his first run of the season. He will once again be entrusted with the kicking duties. Former Blue Bulls scrumhalf Danie van der Merwe is also back in the squad after an injury.

The Boland team is:

Justin Peach, Deon Scholtz, Hein Myburgh, Dewey Swartbooi, Cornel Hendricks, Elgar Watts, Marnus Hugo, David Hendricks, Conrad Burke (capt), Zolani Mofu, Rito Hlungwane, Nico Esterhuyse, Jacobie Adriaanse, Clemen Lewis, Harry Vermaas.

Replacements: Janro van Niekerk, Ivann Espag, Frikkie Spies, Smit Janse van Rensburg, Andre du Toit, Danie van der Merwe, Lionel Cornelius, Alvin Hugo, Godwin Damon.
