Cardiff Blues are chasing Springbok and Bulls scrum-half Fourie Du Preez.  As well trying to lure Du Preez to Cardiff they are looking Down Under for a replacement for outgoing backs coach Rob Howley.

The club based at Arms Park have opened talks with the World Cup-winning Springbok and are hoping to persuade him to join them in time for next season.

Should they get Du Preez to move to Cardiff it would be considered as a major coup because Du Preez was easily the best number nine at the world cup in France 2007.

The No.9 is said to be stalling on signing a new contract with the South African Rugby Union amid rumours of a falling out with new ‘Boks coach Peter De Villiers.

The Blues see this as a gap and have jumped in as they also look for both half-back positions, tighthead prop, second-row and centre.

There is an exodus of Southern Hemisphere players moving to play for European clubs. Du Preez’s Bulls team-mate is thouight to be close to siging for Northampton Saints.

‘We are looking at our options and we have spoken to people,’ Blues head coach Dai Young told South Wales Echo.

While the Blues are lookingt at their options they are waiting to hear from Du Preez and his representatives. Any deal will have to take into account the six non-Welsh qualified player quota agreed with the Welsh Rugby Union.

‘We are ambitious and we have a real appetite to bring in the very best,’ said Young.

‘But just how we go about that is difficult because we have our allotted six non-Welsh players.’
