The announcement comes in the wake of World Championship-winning Australian Under-19 coach Phil Mooney’s selection as coach of the Super 14 franchise.
Mooney said Carozza’s experience as Brisbane-based coach with the national talent squad would give him a head start in selecting and grooming the next generation of exciting young rugby talent in Queensland.
Carozza’s appointment as Mooney’s successor at the academy follows the recent announcement that Mark Bell will take up the post as forwards coach at the Reds, while Ben Whitaker is to head up Queensland Rugby’s high performance section.
Carozza played 95 games on the Queensland wing from 1988 to ’96 and 15 tests for Australia during his international career from 1990 – when he debuted against France – until 1993.
A teacher by profession, he moved into coaching in 2000, before becoming an Elite Player Development Coach with the ARU in 2003.
Carozza selected and coached the national talent squad – which is based in Queensland – with talent identification, co-ordinating the selection and coaching program for the Queensland Schoolboys and involvement in the state Under-15 and Under-16 selection and coaching programs being part of the job.
