Carter cleared for pivotal role

The Crusaders are likely to be at full strength when they face the Bulls in a Super 14 semi-final at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

It has been revealed that fly-half Dan Carter, wing Rico Gear, scrum-half Kevin Senio and prop Wyatt Crockett are “hopeful” of making full recoveries after missing last weekend’s 30-24 defeat at the hands of the Chiefs.

They all took part in training when the Crusaders got down to serious business on Tuesday.

The Crusaders, who are preparing in Durban before flying up to Pretoria on Friday, will announce their starting XV on Tuesday.

However, Carter has declared himself fit for what will be a pivotal role at Loftus.

Carter, who has been suffering with muscle problems in his neck and shoulder region, said he’ll be ready to take contact in training this week.

“Wednesday and Thursday will be a bit of contact work, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be right for Saturday’s game,” Carter told the media.

“So I was always pretty confident about being back in time for the semi. I’m only keen to play when I’m 100 per cent and when I’m not, there are more than capable guys in the team to fill my spot and they’ve done that pretty well.

“I enjoy playing on the veldt. It takes a little bit longer to get your second wind but in terms of being a kicker, it can add distance. You just can’t fall into the trap of trying to kick it too far but the potential is there to kick it further.”
