Cheetahs beat Highlanders at Invercargill

The Highlanders have a perfect record against the Cheetahs and will be looking for their first Super Rugby victory of the season this weekend.

We are waiting for the kick off.

 

Lima Sopoaga kicks off and we are underway. He makes a mess of the kick off so we start with a scrum.

 

1.00: The Highlanders concede the first penalty so the Cheetahs kick for touch.

 

3.00: The Cheetahs get some good continuity attacking in the Highlanders 22. The home side defend well though.

 

4.00: The Cheetahs lose the ball on attack and the Highlanders kick it deep to safety.

 

7.00: Both teams dropping the ball on attack. Following a scrum the Cheetahs are given a free kick and Pretorius takes off with the ball, he passes to Le Roux on the wing and they combine and come so close to scoring but Pretorius loses control of the ball and the Highlanders save the try.

 

9.00:The Cheetahs are looking the more dangerous team at the moment. They win a penalty so Johan Goosen will kick for posts. He takes the shot and nails it. The Cheetahs lead.

 

12.00: The Highlanders try to get a maul going but the Cheetahs defend and stop it from going forward. Their effort wins them the put in for the scrum on their 22.

 

13.00: Cheetahs win the scrum and boot it downfield. The Highlanders run the ball back at the Cheetahs. It’s all happening inside the Cheetahs half.

 

15.00: Penalty to the Highlanders. Sopoaga will kick for posts. His kick hits the posts but the support is there for the Highlanders and they take the ball and attack on the 5m line. The Cheetahs however turn the ball over and kick it out.

 

17.00: Penalty for the Highlanders as Goosen was offside. They kick for the corner and line out.

 

18.00: The Highlanders win the ball but they are blown up for holding on so the Cheetahs kick the ball down to the half way line.

 

19.00: The Cheetahs are going through the phases and then Sarel Pretorius gets the ball on the wing from an inside pass and he races away to score the first TRY of the match. Pretorius was in the build up and was the finisher.

 

20.00: Goosen adds the conversion.

 

24.00: Penalty to the Cheetahs. Goosen takes the kick and nails it.

 

25.00: The Highlanders hit back and stretch the Cheetahs defence with quick ball and the dab kick through for Kade Poki who scores the Highlanders first TRY!

 

26.00: Lima Sopoaga takes the conversion kick and nails it.

 

28.00: The Cheetahs look to be in again for their second try as Robert Ebersohn charges down a kick from Sopoaga and dashes for the line to score the TRY.

 

29.00: Goosen adds the conversion.

 

31.00: Penalty for the Cheetahs for being ahead of the kicker. Goosen lines up and nails the kick from the half way line.

 

32.00: Unbelievably the Cheetahs pick up another easy try from Sopoaga. This time they pick up an intercept pass and Sarel Pretorius races away to score the Cheetahs third try.

 

34.00: Goosen adds the conversion.

 

37.00: Colin Slade comes on and replaces Lima Sopoaga. Oh my, Slade tries the wide ball to the wing and Le Roux almost gets another intercept but the ball goes to ground.

 

39.00: The Highlanders are camped in the Cheetahs 22. The try wave after wave of attack on the 5m line. Eventually the Cheetahs defend the pressure and win a penalty and kick the ball out. It’s half time.

 

The half time score was Highlanders 7 Cheetahs 30 

 

The second half is underway.

 

42.00: The first penalty of the second half goes to the Highlanders. Slade kicks for the corner and the line out.

 

43.00: Highlanders playing the second half at a higher pace. They stretch the Cheetahs who open up on the wing and Kade Poki scores his second TRY.

 

44.00: Slade’s conversion is wide.  

 

47.00: Tony Woodcock concedes a penalty in the scrum so the Cheetahs kick for touch and set up a 5m line out. The Cheetahs win the line out and set up the maul.

 

48.00: The Cheetahs maul comes to an end and they try to work the ball wide but the ball pops out forward and we go back for a scrum.

 

50.00: Heinrich Brussow is about to come on for the Cheetahs and it looks like he will replace Frans Viljoen. He is on.

 

51.00: The Highlanders showed intention early in the second half which produced the try. That seems to have mostly faded now. The match is now an armwrestle.

 

54.00: The Highlanders have the ball in their half. They are just going through the motions really and not making much ground. Then Brussow turns the ball over and the Cheetahs spin the ball wide and the ball goes out.

 

56.00:  The Cheetahs are forcing the Highlanders to play the game in their half. It is just not happening for the Highlanders.

 

58.00: Sarel Pretorius who has been a revelation for the Cheetahs is about to come off and be replaced by Piet van Zyl.

 

59.00: Penalty in their half to the Highlanders. They run it.

 

60.00: The Highlanders line out concedes another ball to the Cheetahs. It is just not happening for them.

 

63.00: The Highlanders try to move the ball through the backs but the ball goes out. Coach Jamie Joseph is going to the bench to try and spark something.

 

65.00: Penalty to the Cheetahs. They will kick for posts. Goosen takes the shot and nails it.

 

68.00: Adriaan Strauss comes off for the Cheetahs.

 

71.00;The Highlanders are trying to move the ball around but they just can’t get that spark. Shaun Treeby on attack gets flattened by Heinrich Brussow. It was high but his knee gets twisted so he has to get some help. He is helped off the field.

 

72.00: The Highlanders get the ball into the Cheetahs 22. Out of almost nothing Kade Poki slips through the Cheetahs defence and scores his third TRY!! A hat trick.

 

73.00: Colin Slade adds the conversion.

 

75.00:Penalty to the Cheetahs. Goosen takes the kick and slots it. That’s eight from eight.

 

76.00: Turnovers conceded : Cheetahs 10 Highlanders 17

 

77.00: The Highlanders are trying to play the game in the Cheetahs half but there is no spark.

 

80.05: The siren sounds and that is it. The Cheetahs win.
