The fierce rivalry between South African rugby teams in the Super 14 series could once again have a detrimental effect on their hopes of reaching the play offs stage of the competition.

Realistically of the South African teams the only two that can reach the play offs are the Sharks and the Stormers, and the Cheetahs could seriously dent the Stormers’ hopes by beating them at Newlands on Saturday.

The Stormers started slowly losing their first three matches on the trot. New coach Rassie Erasmus then got his team to get their act together on the away leg, winning three out of four.

They have four matches at home and one away at Ellis Park remaining but they will need to maintain their momentum.

Local derbies could be even more difficult than playing against the top overseas teams. ‘We play more against one another, so you know your opponents better. People want to compete for Springbok places, so it’s definitely a tougher game,’ Erasmus told the SABC.

The Stormers are in eighth position on the log but with a game in hand but quite crucially they are only five points behind the Blues, who are third.

Their game in hand could be their ace card as a bonus point win is worth five points.
