The Cheetahs gave the Sunwolves their biggest defeat in Super Rugby by beating the new Asian side 92-17 in Bloemfontein on Friday.
The Cheetahs score exceeds their highest ever score in Super Rugby surpassing the 59 they scored against the Lions (59-10) at Welkom in 2010.
The Cheetahs outscored the Sunwolves by 14 tries to 2 in the point-a-minute match. Winger Sergeal Petersen and No.8 Paul Schoeman both scored a hat-trick of tries.
The match came a day after Japan was hit by an earthquake and its questionable as to whether the Sunwolves minds were focused on the match.
As the scoreline indicated, the home side dominated in all aspects of play but it was the Japanese side which opened the scoring with a Tusi Pisi penalty early in the encounter.
That 3-0 lead, however, would be the last time the Sunwolves were ahead as the Cheetahs launched relentless waves of attack with great success.
Cheetahs hooker Torsten van Jaarsveld scored the first try for the Cheetahs which opened the floodgates.
An intercept try followed with Francois Venter crossing the whitewash as the alarm bells began to ring for the hapless visitors.
Raymond Rhule was next to score, before Petersen secured his brace and by the half-time hooter the Cheetahs were 45-3 up.
After the break, Hilton Lobberts was the first to score for the Cheetahs before Clayton Blommetjies collected a try.
The Sunwolves finally scored a couple of consolation tries through Derick Carpenter and Mifi Paea.
It was then back to the Cheetahs try-fest, with Jacques du Toit crossing the line, before Petersen notched up his third and later Schoeman also bagged try number three.
It was a night the Sunwolves would like to forget, while the Cheetahs, in contrast, will remember for years to come.
The Sunwolves will now return home to Japan as they host the Jaguares while the Cheetahs fly to Melbourne to face the Rebels.
