The Cheetahs will have to look for another captain after replacement captain Adriaan Strauss broke his hand and will miss this weekend’s Bulls clash.

Strauss came in as captain for Juan Smith but now coach Naka Drotske will have to name a third Super rugby captain.

Drotske has revealed that Strauss will have surgery this week and will be out of Super rugby for six weeks and this comes while Juan Smith was unable to train on Monday due to his calf injury.

The Cheetahs coach said that he was confident that Smith would make a full recovery but as it is a World cup year he would not be taking any chances.

“Adriaan’s injury is a big setback,” Drotske told Supersport.

“We’ll keep a close watch on the hooker situation as a promising hooker like PW van Vuuren recently underwent a neck operation,” said Drotske.

The Cheetahs will be able to call on Rayno Barnes as replacement hooker and Skipper Badenhorst will provide cover on the bench.

Speaking on the captaincy issue Drotske said,”We trust that Juan will recover in time and will only make a call on who should take over (the captaincy) if he cannot play. We have good leaders in the side.”

“Naas Olivier, for example, has showed as Griquas captain that he can do the job.

“Andries Strauss is an equally strong leader and then there is someone like Frans Viljoen.”

Meanwhile the Cheetahs could have Heinrich Brussow back in the team soon as he will play for the Free State Vodacom Cup team on Friday night as he continues his comeback from a knee injury.
