The Cheetahs will be the first South African team to play in the new 18 team Super Rugby format when they host newcomers the Jaguares in Bloemfontein on Friday.

This year the Cheetahs have a new coach Franco Smith and a new captain Francois Venter but they will be without some of their better players from last year such as Willie le Roux who has moved on to the Sharks.

Even though the Cheetahs don’t appear to be as strong as they were last year on paper they have gone well in preseason matches having beaten the Bulls and the Kings. That said pre-season form can mean nothing.

The Jaguares had a mixed pre-season as they were beaten by the Stormers in Cape Town but then beat the Lions in Johannesburg. They style of play that the Jagures showed in their pre-season was a free flowing and quick passing game which the Cheetahs could struggle to contain given their history of defensive problems.

No expansion team has ever won their opening match. For example in their first ever Super Rugby match the Rebels were beaten 43-0 by the Waratahs at home.

The Jaguares are however a team mainly made up of an international side that reached the semi-finals in the world cup last year.

The Cheetahs win just 41 % of their home matches against all opposition so against what is almost an international side they could be up against it.

Given that both teams like free running rugby this will most likely be a high scoring match.

The Bookies have given the Cheetahs a 6 point start for this Match – with an an offer of up to $200 in Bonus bets. We are going to back the Jaguares to make history by winning their first match. Jaguares by 7.

This Match will be shown on TV in NZ, Aus, SA and in the UK on Sky Sports 2.
