This will be the first meeting between the Cheetahs and Bulls in Super Rugby Unlocked.
The Cheetahs’ 22-point win (53-31) over the Pumas in Round 1 of Super Rugby Unlocked was the biggest winning margin of any side in the opening round.
- The Cheetahs (703m) and the Bulls (503m) gained the most and second most metres, respectively, of any side in Round 1 of Super Rugby Unlocked.
- The Bulls beat a combined 34 defenders in the opening round of Super Rugby Unlocked, 11 more than the next best side on the opening weekend (Pumas – 23).
- The Cheetahs (Clayton Blommetjies – 3 and Jasper Wiese – 2) and the Bulls (Morne Steyn –2 and Ivan van Zyl –2) were the only teams to have multiple players make more than one offload in Round 1 of Super Rugby Unlocked.
- Blommetjies is playing his 100th game for the Cheetahs.
We are waiting for the kick-off.
.00: PEEEEP! WE are underway in the City of Roses.
.00: Blommetjies joins the line at speed, but the fullback knocks on around halfway. Scrum to the Bulls.
.00: It’s end-to-end as both teams attack with ball-in-hand. When the attacks break down, each side kicks deep into the other’s territory, but not to touch; instead, they try to make the opposition kick the ball out.
.00: The hosts try a clever lineout move at the front of the set-piece; however, the Bulls spot the danger and tackle the opposition into touch.
.00: Great work at the ruck by Marco van Staden, who wins the penalty. Morne Steyn clears to the Cheetahs’ 10m.
.00: Superb kick by Tian Schoeman, the flyhalf’s raking clearance goes out inside the Bulls’ 22. Carl Wegner gives away a penalty allowing Steyn to boot the ball deep into the home team’s half.
.00: Jake White’s team struggled with handling last week against Griquas, they have continued where they left off, running around aimlessly and treating the ball like a hot potato.
.00: The Bulls give away a penalty for a high tackle by Clinton Swart on Frans Steyn, who boots to the corner. Rosco Specman cannot finish in the corner, knocking the ball into touch.
.00: Van Staden gives away a cheap penalty after taking out Ruan Pienaar at the ruck. Van Staden dived into the knees of Pienaar, who is down injured. Tian Meyer is coming on for the former Springboks scrum-half, who leaves on a cart.
.00: PENALTY! Shoeman opens the scoring for the hosts. 3-0
.00: Bulls attack again, this time they are pushed backward, from the Cheetahs’ 22 to the host’s 10m. The home team is going direct, but the opposition’s defence is strong.
.00: Frans Steyn makes a good tackle, but the Bulls have a penalty-advantage inside the Cheetahs’ 22. Tian Meyer is the man offside, but so was the entire Cheetahs backline. Morne Steyn calls for the tee.
.00: PENALTY! Steyn levels the scores. 3-3
.00: TRY! Malcolm Jaer comes off his wing to wrap-around the Bulls defence before sending fellow winger Rosco Specman away for his first try of the game and third of the tournament. 8-3
.00: CONVERSION! Shoeman slots the sideline conversion. 10-3
.00: The Bulls continue to make their way into the opposition’s half, but poor handling or decision-making keeps letting them down. More good defending by the hosts lead to a knock-on by the visitors inside the Cheetahs’ 22.
.00: Meyer boots the ball directly into touch attempting a cross-field kick. The Cheetahs do, however, win a penalty at the lineout – Schoeman calls for the tee.
.00: PENALTY! What a kick by the flyhalf, who lands the 51-metre long kick. 13-3
.00: The hooter sounds, the Cheetahs win their lineout, and clear the ball into the stands. A good half by the hosts, who look the better of the two teams. The Bulls look rubbish, again. There is no direction to their play, they are one-dimensional, their handling is poor and discipline lacking. White has a job on his hands.
The halftime score was Cheetahs 13 Bulls 3
.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in Bloemfontein.
.00: The Bulls come out firing, dominating a driving maul and winning a penalty; Duane Vermeulen declines the three, opting instead for a lineout on the Cheetahs’ 5m. HERE WE GO!
.00: OH, DEAR! Johan Grobbelaar’s throw is not straight. JEEZ!
.00: Van Staden wins an important penalty at the ruck with the hosts on a promising attack.
.00: Both benches being emptied as the coaches go for fresh legs.
.00: Andisa Ntsila concedes a kickable penalty inside his 22; Steyn will take a shot.
.00: PENALTY! Steyn doubles his team’s tally and cuts the deficit to seven. 13-6
.00: The hosts win a kickable penalty of their own.
.00: PENALTY! Schoeman kicks his third goal of the evening. 16-6
.00: More ill-discipline by the visitors, this time by Sintu Manjezi, gives Schoeman another shot at goal.
.00: PENALTY! Schoeman is on fire; this game is getting away from the Bulls. 19-6
.00: YELLOW CARD! Ruan Nortje infringes in the maul, the ref has had enough.
.00: MISS! Schoeman misses his first kick of the night. 19-6
.00: PENALTY! Steyn pulls three back for his team. 19-9
.00; Bulls doing well with 14, they have an opportunity here.
.00: PENALTY! Chris Smith makes it 19-12 with 10 to go. 19-12
.00: This game is on, the Bulls only need to score a try; anything can happen.
.00: Cheetahs have good field position, but give away a needless penalty to let the Bulls off.
.00: The Bulls have an attacking lineout on the home team’s line.
.00: TRY! Joe van Zyl scores his first SR try after a powerful driving maul, the first of the night for the visitors. 19-17
.00: MISS! The conversion is wide by Chris Smith- oh, no! 19-17
.00: Bulls win the penalty, one last chance.
.00: Bulls lose the ball forward – game over!
