The Cheetahs got their first win of the 2008 Super 14 season beating the Reds by 29 points to 14. The result seemed certain for the Cheetahs after the tenth minute as the Cheetahs led 17-0.

The Cheetahs kept that lead until the second half when Duanne Vermeulen scored a try and extended the lead.

JW Jonker scored in the last movement of the match earning the Cheetahs the bonus point after Peter Hynes, winger for the Reds, was unable to control a rolling kick by inside centre, Meyer Bosman.

Captain and lock Rory Duncan powered over for the Cheetahs’ first try in the fourth minute of the match and, shortly afterwards, Bosman scored after his midfield partner, Jonker, slipped through the Reds’ defence.

The 22 year old, Bosman, played one of his best games of his career.

If he can keep up his form, he could find himself in Bok coach Peter de Villiers’ plans for the tests against Wales and Italy.

Another player to watch is loose forward, Duanne Vermeulen. who’s man of the match performance saw him tackling well and taking the game to the visitors.

Barend Pieterse (lock), Heinrich Brussow and Hendro Scholtz (both flankers) deserve mention for the part they played in the victory.

The Reds lost two of their most influential players early in the match. The fullback, Chris Latham (knee) and scrumhalf, Sam Cordingley both left the field in the first quarter of the match.

Springbok prop, CJ van der Linde, was yellow carded by referee Bryce Lawrence in the 62nd minute of the match and while he was in the sin bin, Charlie Fetoai scored his and the Reds; second try.

Schifcofske made no mistake with his second conversion of the game. Cheetahs’ winger, Eddie Fredericks, played in his 50th Super rugby match of his career.

Speaking after the match Reds captain Sam Cordingley who went off injured in the first half said that he felt the Reds lacked enthusiasm in the match.

The Reds were hit hard in the first half losing their captain and playmaker Chris Latham who was replaced by two try scorer Charlie Fetoai.

Duanne Vermeulen won man of the match.
