Chiefs down Lions in Hamilton

The Chiefs have scored 113 points in their last two matches. They might have lost Sitiveni Sivivatu but Dwayne Sweeney comes on this week and within minutes of coming on last week he was on the scorecard.

1.00:Stephen Donald gets a chance to add some points almost straight after the kick off but he missses.

 

5.00:The Lions win a scrum and run the ball. They get a free kick as they gain momentum.

 

6.00: The Lions run the ball quickly and Jano Vermaak finds a gap and scores the first try.

 

7.00: Andre Pretorius converts the try.

 

10.00: The Chiefs get some good go-forward ball/ They work the ball into the Lions 25. The Lions turn it over and Andre Pretorius clears.

 

13.00:  Andre Pretorius fails to find touch as he tries to clear. The Chiefs go on attack and Brendon Leonard makes a break and looks dangerous but the Lions defence holds up.

 

15.00: The Lions get a team warning for infringements and the Chiefs get a penalty after the Lions indiscretion. Stephen Donald takes the kick and slots it. 

 

17.00: It’s all the Chiefs now as they maintain possession, Dwayne Sweeney gets a break and runs in the first Chiefs try.

 

18.00: Stephen Donald converts the try.

 

21.00:The Chiefs give away a kickable penalty so Andre Pretorius takes the kick and misses it from in front of the posts.

 

23.00: Great play from the Lions who are playing with confidence. They kick behind the Chiefs defence and Mils Muliaina misses the ball but Jaque Fourie gathers the ball and scores the Lions second try.

 

24.00: Andre Pretorius misses the conversion.

 

27.00:  Henno Mentz gives a penalty away for tackling a player in the air.

 

28.00: There is some off the ball stuff which gives the citing commissioner something to look at after the game.

 

31.00: The Lions have clearly come to play as they get good go forward ball. They use the cut out pass but the ball bounces out.

 

32.00: Andre Pretorius takes a chance and tries for a drop goal, he gets it.

 

37.00: The Lions kick the ball up and into the Chiefs 25. They get good attacking position but the Chiefs defence get back in time. Just in time.

 

39.00: Unbelievably the Lions are playing out of their skins. They get the bounce of the ball and Jaque Fourie slices through the defence to score his second try.

 

39.00: Andre Pretorius slots the conversion.

 

40.05: The siren goes for half time.

44.00: The Chiefs seem somewhat subdued probably overconfident going into the match. Dwayne Sweeney however has a great run through the Lions defence but is eventually caught.

 

46.00:Lelia Masaga goes down injured but the game continues.  

 

48.00: Lelia Masaga comes off injured as Richard Kahui has a dart for the line but gets pushed into touch.

 

49.00: It has to be said the Lions are playjng a great game. On defence they are strong and scoreline shows the attack is working well.  

 

51.00: Ernst Joubert gets a yellow card for an indiscretion at the breakdown.

 

53.00:Just when you think the Chiefs are going to come back Earl Rose gets an intercept pass and runs in a try untouched. That’s a bonus point try.

 

54.00: Andre Pretorius slots the conversion.

 

56.00: Callum Bruce has a run which excites the Chiefs but that Lions defence holds strong.

 

60.00: The Chiefs up the pace a little and the Lions are starting to let the tackles slip. Dwayne Sweeney gets through and scores his second try.

 

61.00: Stephen Donald slots the conversion.

 

63.00: The Chiefs give away a penalty so Andre Pretorius takes a shot at goal but misses.

 

64.00: The Lions keep up the pressure and Jano Vermaak makes a break but knocks on.

 

66.00: The Chiefs get their game going as Jackson Willison scores the Chiefs third try.

 

68.00: Stephen Donald slots the conversion.

 

69.00: The Lions lose Todd Clever as tthe Chiefs take control of this match. Hika Elliot scores the Chiefs bonus point try.

 

70.00: Stephen Donald slots the conversion which puts the Chiefs into the lead.

 

73.00: The Chiefs are really in control now as Dwayne Sweeney scores his third try after Callum Bruce put in a chip kick..
