The Chiefs lost their second match on tour to the Cats won their first match of the Super 14 on Friday night at Ellis Park. Early on the Cats had Willem Scholtz sent off but they held on well. Later on in the match with six minutes to go the Chiefs had Marty Holah sent off but it made little difference as the Cats were already ahead.

The only try of the game came from Tuitupou in the 27th minute. Donald passed to Tuitupou who cut through the Cats midfield to score under the posts.

Just why Willem Scholtz was sent off we dont really know. TV footage was inconclusive but then again Stuart Dickinson does like his cards and he has sent players off in the past without seeing an infringement himself.

One of the most exciting moments of the match was Januarie’s dart for the line at the half time siren only to be stopped by the Chiefs defence. Later Januarie had another great break only to pass the ball and Klein Jan Tromp to knock it on.

The game was constantly interrupted by Stuart Dickinson who persistently blew his whistle for Chiefs infringements. With the number of Chiefs penalties gave away they were very lucky not to have lost by a larger margin and not to have had more cards.

The Cats may have won the match but they were given the match by the Chiefs indiscipline. The Cats kicking was woeful and the margin should have been a lot bigger. By full time the Cats had missed 5 kicks at goal and two drop goals.

The match ended with an exciting spell where the Chiefs showed that they can retain the ball and play well but they will have to play like that for the whole match to get their first win of the Super 14.

The Chiefs are away from home and it is the start of the season but they will need to pull up their socks if they are going to finish in the top half of the log. At this stage they look like they would easily lose to the Blues.
