Super Rugby’s leaders the Chiefs have paid a price for their bonus point victory over the Rebels as No.8 Michael Leitch has been ruled out for almost two months.

Leitch dislocated his thumb in the second half of the Chiefs 36-15 win over the Chiefs and needs surgery that puts his participation at the very end of the season in doubt.

Super Rugby will take a break after the next round for the June Internationals for the month of June which will soften the blow for the Chiefs but its unlikely that he will be able to return before the Chiefs season ending clash with the Highlanders.

The injury is a blow for Japan captain Leitch as he will miss the June Internationals and the Chiefs as their pack has been ravaged by injuries this season.

Leitch has started nine straight games and has almost played every minute of Chiefs Super Rugby since his introduction this season in Round 2.

The Chiefs will be able to call on Tom Sanders and Maama Vaipulu for the interim.

Hamilton’s Chiefs can also expect to be without Seta Tamanivalu for the match against the Waratahs this weekend after he rolled his ankle against the Rebels but they should be able to call on Charlie Ngatai who is set to return from a concussion lay-off.
