The Chiefs are sweating over the fitness of their in-form scrum half Brendon Leonard ahead of their clash on Friday with the Crusaders who are still unbeaten.

Leonard is suffering from a bruised knee and he will take no part in training during the early part of the run up to the match.

Chiefs management are hopeful that he will recover and that he will be fit to play by Friday.

Chiefs coach Ian Foster is expected to field an unchanged line-up from the side that beat the Brumbies two weeks ago ahead of their bye last week. .

Captain Mils Muliaina is recovering from a hamstring strain but should be ready to face the Crusaders.

The Chiefs have been boosted however by the return of Sosene Anesi who has now been taken off the injured list after an ankle problem kept him out for several matches and he is now back in training.

Captain Jono Gibbes, who has missed the Chiefs’ last five matches with a torn hamstring, didn’t play club rugby at the weekend as the Chiefs had hoped and while he has resumed training it would seem unlikely that Foster will bring him back for this weekend’s big match. At best he could probably only hope for a place on the bench.

Foster will announce his team on Wednesday.
