  • The Blues have won three of their last four Super Rugby games against the Chiefs, including their last two on the bounce; the last and only previous time they won more in succession against the Chiefs was a four-game streak in their first four meetings in the competition (1996-1999).

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

In the meantime, why not have a look at the match preview.

.00: PEEEEP! We are underway at FMG Stadium in Hamilton.

.00: Mitchell Brown infringes at the ruck after an inaccurate cleanout of Patrick Tuipulotu.

.00: Sam Cane wins a turnover penalty after isolating Rieko Ioane at the breakdown.

.00: Quinn Tupaea stays on his feet and looks for contact after a midfield break from his half; however, the hooker should have drawn the man and passed to the supporting Kaleb Trask, who would have run away for the try.

.00: A few reset scrums slow the game down. The Blues go to the wide channel, but end up kicking away possession after they end down a blind alley.

.00: Quinn Tupaea makes another line-break, coasting through the Blues midfield, but the attack breaks down following a knock-on by the Chiefs.

.00: It’s all Chiefs at the moment, although they cannot find the last pass after a line-break.

.00: The Auckland team wins a much-needed penalty, and they kick to the corner. Leon McDonald’s men want more than three points.

.00: Aidan Ross is offside. The Chiefs defended the lineout and the maul expertly but strayed offside at the breakdown as the Hamilton men battered the goal line. Blues decide to scrum, this time.

.00: Mitchell Brown is pinged for offsides again, this time for a scrum infringement; Blues want another scrum.

.00: Hoskins Sotutu went close, but some poor play by Harry Plummer kills the attack.

.00: TRY! Akira Ioane spins out of Brad Weber and Sam Cane’s tackles to open the scoring. The try came from a botched Chiefs lineout. Finlay Christie won the loose ball, was tackled short. Patrick Tuipulotu had a go before Ioane barged his way over. 0-5

.00: CONVERSION! Otere Black converts. 0-7

.00: Both hookers are struggling with their throwing, there is no wind, so not sure what is going on. Luteru Tolai and Samisoni Taukei’aho have both lost two, gifting the opposition a reprieve.

.00: Brilliant tackle from Damian McKenzie, who like last weekend, saved the day with a last-ditch tackle on Mark Telea. The winger dropped the ball over the touchline after McKenzie’s hit. Cane opts for a scrum because his side’s lineout is poor.

.00: Chiefs win the penalty, clear. Quinn Tupaea and Kaleb Trask combine again, but the flyhalf runs away from support before throwing a poor forward pass to Sean Wainui. Tupaea has carried three times for 37 metres from two line-breaks.

.00: Finlay Christie clears, but only to the 10m.

.00: Hoskins Sotutu forces Sean Wainui into an error after contact. It’s been a scrappy game so far, with both teams guilty of four handling errors apiece.

.00: Anton Lienert-Brown is nailed for a late tackle on Stephen Perofeta after the fullback kicked a grubber behind the Chiefs’ line. Black kicks to the corner.

.00: Superb work by the home team to win back possession after a turnover at the breakdown. Weber clears to past the 22.

.00: Mitchell Brown gives away his third penalty of the half, this time for offside. The Blues kick to the corner for the fifth time looking for the score.

.00: The Blues –– once again –– lose possession near the try line. The Chiefs counter-attack from their line, going all the way to the halfway line through Weber.

.00: Weber’s break takes play to the opposition’s half before Ioane gets back to tackle. The quick ball goes wide. Shaun Stevenson almost scores in the corner, but a poor pass bounces into touch. Otere Black hears the siren, decides to kick to touch.

The halftime score was Chiefs 0 Blues 7

.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in New Zealand.

.00: The Blues have made two changes to the scrum, bring on Karl Tu’inukuafe, Ofa Tuungafasi, and Gerard Cowley-Tuioti (two new props and a lock), to get the early ascendency in the set-piece battle.

.00: Referee James Doleman has to speak to the front rows because there are too many reset scrums.

.00: Luke Jacobson wins his side an important penalty. McKenzie calls for the tee.

.00: PENALTY! McKenzie gets his team on the board. 3-7

.00: Big scrum by the Chiefs, who smash the Blues’ pack and win the penalty.

.00: The Blues almost win the lineout; however, another knock-on gives the hosts another attacking opportunity.

.00: Superb offensive and defensive work by Kaleb Trask, who makes the tackle then wins the kickable penalty. Trask goes to the corner. Cane wants more.

.00: NO TRY! The Chiefs batter the goal line, going six phases before Anton Lienert-Brown latches onto a grubber. However, Stephen Perofeta knocks the ball out of Lienert-Brown’s hands as the centre attempts to dot down the ball. We will go back to the previous penalty advantage under the poles. 3-7

.00: NO TRY! Cane opts for another driving maul. The hosts drive the visitors over their line, but the maul is held up. It’s a goal-line drop-out. 3-7

.00: Black drops a high ball into touch to give the Chiefs an attacking lineout. Several phases later, Mark Telea is offside, but Cane –– for the third time –– eschews the points.

.00: TRY! Finally, the Chiefs get over the try line. The Chiefs push the Blues pack backwards before Samisoni Taukei’aho flopped over the chalk. 8-7

.00: MISS! McKenzie cannot add the extras 8-7

.00: The Blues, who had messed up the last few restarts, concede a penalty inside their half after Cane is isolated. Black calls for the tee, for a change.

.00: MISS! Black pushes his kick wide of the righthand post. 8-7

.00: TRY! Tom Robinson crashes over after Caleb Clarke’s sublime touchline break. Jonathan Ruru shifted to Dalton Papali’i, drew his man before sending Robinson away down the sideline. 8-12

.00: MISS! Blacks pushed his kick past the lefthand post, this time. 8-12

.00: The Blues go all the way from their half into the opposition’s 22. They go 16 phases before a forward pass kills the attack. Had the Blues scored, this game would be all but over.

.00: A big scrum by the visitors sees them win a penalty. Black kicks to the corner.

.00: NO TRY! Dalton Papali’i dots down after a powerful driving maul, but Gerard Cowley-Tuioti is in front of Papali’i, obstructing the tacklers. The Chiefs survive, just! 8-12

.00: The Chiefs break from their half and into the opposition’s 22, they have had possession for 15 phases before Papali’i knocks-on trying to intercept. Chase Tiatia has come on and made an impact just as he did last weekend.

.00: PENALTY awarded for a deliberate knockdown, the TMO changed the referee’s call. Chiefs go to the corner.

.00: Oh, dear! The home team’s forwards botched the lineout, that could be the game.

17 TRY! Sensational! McKenzie crashes over after another sensational counter-attack to win the game for Clayton McMillan’s men, who finally win back-to-back games. Jacobson’s burst into the 22, and offload to the fullback was stunning. 13-12

.00: CONVERSION! The hooter sounds, then McKenzie slots the conversion. 15-12
