Brumbies beat Chiefs in Hamilton

The Chiefs have played the Brumbies 26 times in Super Rugby since 1996; the Chiefs have won 11 matches, lost 14 times and drawn once.

2.00; The Brumbies get the ball back from the restart and boot it well upfield. The Chiefs win the line out and boot it well back to the Brumbies who kick it out again.

4.00: The Chiefs win the line out and run the ball until it is lost forward. The Brumbies come away with the ball from the scrum and run it. They use a decoy runner and slice through the Chiefs who have to scramble but get back to stop the attack.

7.00: It’s all the Brumbies on attack. The Chiefs are having to make a lot of early tackles defending their territory.

8.00: Penalty to the Brumbies. They take the line out option. Initially, they use the maul but then go wide and James Slipper juggles the ball and it gets to Tom Banks who slips through a tackle and goes over to score. TRY! The TMO confirms no knock-on.

10.00: Noah Lolesio knocks over the conversion and the Brumbies lead 7-0.

14.00: Wow. The Brumbies win a line out just outside the Chiefs 22, they move the ball wide and the Chiefs drift across and at the end of the line Aaron Cruden gets beaten by Solomone Kata who goes in to the corner and scores. TRY! Great finishing.

16.00: The conversion is missed but the Brumbies have a 12-0 lead.

19.00: The Brumbies go on the attack again and they get to the 5m line, they move the ball wide and look dangerous but there is a knock-on. Chiefs 5m scrum.

24.00: The Chiefs win the scrum and push the Brumbies back. The Brumbies get the ball and run at the Chiefs again win a penalty. They kick for touch and take the line out. The Brumbies use the maul and drive to the line where the drive disintegrates just short. The Chiefs get a 5m scrum.

27.00: The Chiefs win the line out. They run the ball but then kick and the Brumbies attack but knock-on.

30.00: Scrum penalty to the Brumbies inside their half. They kick for touch and take the line out option.

34.00: The Chiefs get some ball in their half and run it. They get into the Brumbies 22 but the Brumbies turn it over. They kick it and Damien McKenzie loses the ball on the ground a couple of metres from the line but regathers it. The Chiefs get back as the Brumbies get there and the Brumbies are awarded a 5m scrum.

36.00: The Brumbies win the scrum, get the advantage but it doesn’t matter as Pete Samu slices off the back and dives under the posts and scores. TRY! 

37.00: Lolesio takes the conversion from in front and nails it. The Brumbies lead 19-0!! The Brumbies are on track for a bonus point if it stays like this too.

40.00: The Brumbies turn the ball over as the siren sounds and boot the ball into touch.

42.00: The Brumbies get the ball from the kick off and just keep the ball moving through the hands. They make gradual ground but Pete Samu powers through the Chiefs and then dodges another tackle and runs for the line to score. TRY!  

43.00: Lolesio adds the conversion. The Brumbies lead 26-0 – they are having the near perfect game!

46.00: The Chiefs decide to take the game to the Brumbies. They drive the Brumbies back to their line and look dangerous but the Brumbies hold on. When the Chiefs concede a penalty we go back for an earlier offside. The Chiefs are given a warning.

47.00: The Chiefs win the scrum and they go through two quick phases and Aaron Cruden slices through a gap and scores. TRY! 

48.00:Mckenzie adds the conversion and the Chiefs are on the board at 7-26.

51.00: The Chiefs go through 8 phases on attack and get into the Brumbies 22. They win a penalty and tap it quickly. The Chiefs go over the line – it’s messy so we go upstairs to the TMO to check what happened or who has scored. No try as there is no evidence but James Slipper is yellow carded for offside. The Chiefs have a penalty and take a 5m scrum. Scott Sio comes on and Pete Samus goes off.

52.00: Penalty from the scrum to the Chiefs.

54.00: They take another scrum on the 5m line. The Chiefs win the scrum and almost as they did before they snipe at speed and this time Anton Lienert-Brown scores. TRY! In both tries the initial power break came from Pita Gus Sowakula.

56.00: McKenzie adds the conversion.

60.00: The Brumbies are trying to hold on to the ball in order to wind down the clock. They are forced to kick but the ball goes into touch.

63.00: Will Miller of the Brumbies gets some help from the medics and has to leave the field. He was injured in a tackle and will have to go for a HIA. He is replaced by R.Valentini.

66.00: The Brumbies enjoy some time on attack but they concede a penalty so the Chiefs kick for touch and take the line out.

68.00: The Chiefs get a good shove on the Brumbies at the scrum and it wins them a penalty. Cruden kicks for touch as they take the line out.

69.00: The Chiefs win the line out but the Brumbies defend and they win a penalty. The Brumbies clear the ball to the half way line.

72.00: The Chiefs are trying hard but the Brumbies are too good in defense. The Brumbies turn the ball over and Lolesio kicks it into touch. Miller comes back on for the Brumbies after his HIA.

75.00: The Chiefs attack in the corner but the Brumbies defend and drive them into touch. Chiefs line out as the Brumbies took it out. The line out is not straight so the Brumbies take the scrum as their option.

78.00: The Brumbies drive the Chiefs back into their 22.

78.00: The Chiefs get the ball and run it down the line but they lose the ball so the Brumbies hold on to the ball and will wind down the clock.

79.00: The Chiefs go off their feet and the Brumbies get a scrum.

80.00: The siren sounds. The Brumbies win the scrum boot the ball out and win the match.
