Super rugby Aotearoa : Home | SR Aotearoa Fixtures | Super rugby AU : Home | SR AU Fixtures |

The Chiefs have played Hurricanes 33 times in Super Rugby since 1996, winning 15 matches and losing 17 games with one draw between the teams.

Those 15 Super Rugby wins give the Chiefs a record of winning 46% of their matches against the Hurricanes.

  • The Chiefs have won four of their last five regular season Super Rugby games against the Hurricanes, despite leading at half-time just twice in that span.
  • But the Waikato side has lost their last five games on the bounce heading into this fixture; the last time they lost more consecutive Super Rugby games was a six-game stretch across the 2008 and 2009 campaigns.
  • Each of the Canes’ last eight New Zealand derbies in Super Rugby has been won by the home team on the day.
  • The Hurricanes have beaten 29 defenders per game this Super Rugby season, more than any other team in the competition, the Chiefs rank third with 25 beaten per game.
  • TJ Perenara (Hurricanes) has scored four tries in his last six games against the Chiefs, including a brace in his last game against them; he needs just one more for his 50th career try in Super Rugby.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kickoff.

Ngani Laumape is making his 50th Super Rugby appearance tonight.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in Hamilton after a moment’s silence for the tragic events in Christchurch.

2.00: TRY! Anton Lienert-Brown charges down Chase Tiatia’s kick, gathers and races away to open the scoring. 5-0

3.00: CONVERSION! Damian McKenzie slots the kick. Great start for the home team. 7-0

5.00: It’s that man Ngani Laumape, who sets up an attack with another classy offload to Du’Plessis Kirifi. The flanker is tackled by the omnipresent Brodie Retallick and steps on the chalk.

8.00: Retallick is pinged at the ruck for not holding his body-weight. Beauden Barrett opts for the up-and-under for his brother Jordie, but McKenzie is back to save the Chiefs. The Hurricanes will take a shot at goal as there was no advantage.

9.00: PENALTY! Beauden Barrett puts the Canes on the board. 7-3

11.00: The Chiefs are playing in their first ever Super Rugby jersey when they played as Waikato Chiefs in 1996. It looks pretty retro. Carlos Spencer is running water duties for the Hurricanes and boy he is looking buff.

12.00: Ataata Moeakiola has taken out Jordie Barrett a little late. It doesn’t look malicious, more careless and possibly not even a penalty. Beauden Barrett kicks to the corner after the TMO confirms it was a penalty. The Chiefs drive towards the line but Kirifi knocks on trying to ground the ball.

14.00: The Chiefs give away their third penalty, already. It came from a missed clearance and offsides kick to Jordie Barrett. Canes opt for a scrum.

15.00: TRY! Easy as you like! The Canes go to the left, Beauden Barrett throws a dummy, puts Matt Proctor through a small gap and the centre crashes over from close range. 7-8

16.00: CONVERSION! Barrett adds the extras. 7-10

18.00: Kirifi knocks on in contact, again. He hit the gap hard, but his hands have been dodgy, so far tonight.

20.00: TRY! Wow! It’s that man Damian McKenzie after Brad Weber’s scrappy offload bounces into Tumua Manu’s hands. Tyler Adron was involved twice, once with the break off the scrum and offloading to Weber.

22.00: CONVERSION! McKenzie converts his score. 14-10

24.00: The Canes go 11 phases after some good work by Dane Coles at the breakdown. It’s the hooker who drives forward with the final phase as well, but TJ Perenara knocks on from a few metres out.

26.00: The Chiefs get out of their half and regathers after Jordie Barrett’s bomb. However, the penalty goes to the Canes after Weber is caught for holding. Jordie Barrett calls for the tee. He’s about 47 metres out and pretty much in front. He has the breeze behind him, too.

27.00: PENALTY! Jordie Barrett hits the long-range effort clean through the poles. 14-13

29.00: TRY SAVING TACKLE! Manu goes for the big aerial dive in the corner, but Beauden Barrett gets back and hits the centre, dislodging the ball out of his hands and into touch.

31.00: Ardie Savea rips the ball from an opposition player’s hands, and the Canes can clear. Massive play from Savea.

33.00: Vaea Fifita is caught offsides. Weber had put in a stab-kick grubber but Wes Goosen got across to halt the danger; however, referee Mike Fraser goes back for the advantage.

34.00: PENALTY! McKenzie extends his side’s lead. 17-13

36.00: Waikato goes to the back of the lineout, the home team set and then go wide. Two big runs by Manu and Ardon put the hosts in good position inside the visitor’s 22. The Canes scramble, snaffle McKenzie but are offsides. Chiefs want to take a scrum. It’s under the posts.

38.00: The scrum goes down. There’s a bit of niggle but nothing much. Reset.

39.00: The scrum goes down again. Reset.

40.00: A big shove from the Chiefs sees them win a penalty. They don’t want another scrum, instead, they will take another shot at goal.

42.00: PENALTY! McKenzie splits the uprights. 20-13

The halftime score was Chiefs 20 Hurricanes 13

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in Hamilton.

42.00: Mitchell Karpik is caught at the ruck for not rolling away, giving the Hurricanes a chance to reduce the deficit.

43.00: PENALTY! Beauden Barrett adds the three. 20-16

45.00: We are having some more reset scrums. World Rugby needs to sort this out.

47.00: The Hurricanes are looking to create in the wide channels when they have the chance, but some good defending knocks them back into their own half. Eventually, a kicking game ensues as the sides look for territory.

49.00: Ataata Moeakiola runs over an opposition player, breaks two tackles before setting up a fabulous counter-attack. The Chiefs have possession, still.

50.00: It’s been 10 phases but eventually, McKenzie loses possession after taking contact. Good defending by John Plumtree’s men.

51.00: TRY! What a finish! Tiatia breaks the line, races into the Chiefs’ 22 before sending Goosen away. The winger is ankle-tapped but his momentum carries him over the whitewash. 20-21

53.00: CONVERSION! Barrett makes no mistake from out wide. 20-23

55.00: The Hurricanes have controlled the tempo of the second half because they have had all the possession. The Chiefs have kicked the ball away too often and aimlessly.

57.00: A counter-ruck by the Hurricanes comes to no avail as Mr Fraser penalises them for coming through offsides.

58.00: PENALTY! McKenzie slots the 56-metre penalty to level the scores. 23-all

60.00: Lienert-Brown loses his footing and is out. However, it’s an exhibition of kill between the Barrett and McKenzie brothers.

62.00: There’s been a lot of stoppages, but the hits have been taking their toll on the players in this derby. You wouldn’t think the Chiefs had lost four in a row.

64.00: Etene Nanai-Seturo is away down the sideline after Adron won a turnover from Jordie Barrett. Nanai-Seturo kicks ahead but Tiatia collects. However, the fullback knocks on in contact.

65.00: BIG scrum by the Chiefs, winning the scrum-penalty.

67.00: MISS! McKenzie pulls his kick wide. 23-all

68.00: Tiatia makes another break; he’s made 68 metres with nine carries breaking the line once and slipping four tackles. Marty McKenzie finds a nice touch-finder.

70.00: We are entering the final stages of this intriguing New Zealand derby. Both sides are looking for territory, using the boot to good effect.

71.00: Good turnover by the Hurricanes’ forwards, winning the turnover after holding up the Chiefs in the maul.

74.00: Tiatia has been everywhere, this time he pins the Chiefs back inside their 22 with a wonderful grubber.

75.00: OH DEAR! Massive moment as Marty McKenzie drops the ball out over his dead-ball line. Five-metre scrum to the visitors.

77.00: Massive let-off for the home team! They get lucky after Liam Mitchell knocks on trying to go for a pick-and-drive under the posts. The play is stopped because of an injury to Alex Fidow. The Chiefs have missed 25 tackles to the Canes’ 10. Crazy.

78.00: Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi is wrapped up at the base of the scrum, but McKenzie gets a chance to clear after the Canes are penalised for offsides.

79.00: Jordie Barrett kicks out on the full. Lineout to the chiefs inside their half. Here we go!

81.00: The hooter goes; last play of the game. Hurricanes scrum in their half.

83.00: The Hurricanes lose the ball after 13 phases and the Chiefs’ counter-attack. Damian McKenzie tries a stab-kick, it rebounds, he regathers and the attack continues for another phase before another knock on kills the chance of a first victory of the season.
