Jaguares beat Chiefs in Rotorua

  • The Jaguares have won their last three games on the bounce, never before have they won a stretch of four or more.
  • The Chiefs have made the most (17) and conceded the fewest (8) clean breaks of any team in the competition this season.
  • Emiliano Boffelli has scored nine tries in his last 10 games for the Jaguares, including five tries in his last five appearances.
  • Solomona Aolaimalo has gained 778m this campaign, more than any other player in the competition, and 262m more than Jaguares’ best Joaquin Tuculet (516m).

Match detail

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in Rotorua.

3.00: Some early pressure by the Chiefs as they attack inside the Jaguares 22.

5.00: There is already some lineout problems by the Chiefs; one overthrown and another lost.

7.00: After some sustained pressure, the Chiefs opt for a shot at goal.

8.00: PENALTY! Damian McKenzie puts the home team on the board. 3-0

10.00: The Jaguares win a penalty, and kick for the corner.

11.00: The Chiefs defend the driving maul, expertly. They kick the ball out but lose possession.

13.00: The Jaguares go 15 phases before Karl Tu’inukuafe is caught offsides.

14.00: MISS! Nicolas Sanchez hits the post from almost in front. 3-0

16.00: The Argentinians have possession inside the Chiefs half. The visitors have been good in the opening quarter, but they have again been found wanting in the red zone.

18.00: The Jaguares win a penalty around halfway. Emiliano Boffelli will attempt the long-range penalty.

20.00: PENALTY! Emiliano Boffelli’s kick sails through the uprights with distance to spare: wow! 3-all

22.00: Big scrum by the young Chiefs’ pack; they win the penalty and will take a shot.

24.00: PENALTY! Damian McKenzie makes no mistake from out wide. 6-3

27.00: TRY! Ramiro Moyano is over in the corner after Joaquin Tuculet’s break in midfield. Tu’inukuafe knocked on and the visitors countered with pace and panache. The Chiefs transition defence was non-existent. 6-8

28.00: CONVERSION! Sanchez adds the extras. 6-10

30.00: The Jaguares have only missed one tackle, while the Chiefs have missed seven. Luke Jacobson is down holding his knee.

33.00: Huge scrum by the Chiefs. They marched the South Americans backwards for the second time in the match, winning the penalty which McKenzie kicks deep into the opposition’s half.

34.00: The Chiefs continue to lose lineouts, this time the ball is forward after they attempt a short lineout move.

36.00: It’s the same old handling errors from the Chiefs, who knock on another ball. It is all very clunky from the home team.

37.00: The Jaguares have brought the noisy travelling support with them again. The Argentinians are making themselves heard.

38.00: Another big scrum by the hosts, who destroyed the Jaguares scrum, which collapsed under the weight of the Chiefs pressure.

39.00: PENALTY! Damian McKenzie, from straight in front, reduces the deficit to one point. 9-10

40.00: McKenzie starts a counter-attack and throws a between-the-legs pass which sets up some great field position. The hooter sounds with the Chiefs near the Jaguares 22.

41.00: The Chiefs get another penalty after going 10 phases. McKenzie will take another shot at goal.

42.00: PENALTY! McKenzie gives his side the halftime lead. 12-10

The halftime score was Chiefs 12 Jaguares 10

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway at International Stadium.

42.00: Liam Polwart is caught offsides. The Jaguares had a great spell with ball-in-hand before winning the penalty.

43.00: PENALTY! Sanchez puts his side back ahead. 12-13

44.00: Tomas Lavanini gives away a silly penalty at the breakdown.

45.00: MISS! McKenzie shaves the upright with his fifth penalty attempt. The Jaguares clear but the Chiefs have possession inside their half.

46.00: Julian Montoya wins the penalty at the ruck. Pita Gus Sowakula also came in from the side.

47.00: Tomas Lezana breaks into the Chiefs 22, however, the ball is lost forward and the home side counter.

49.00: The game, for the lack of tries, has had some outstanding pieces of skill from broken play. We are going to the TMO to check for foul play by Michael Allardice, who flipped Lezana.

50.00: YELLOW CARD! Allardice is off the field for 10 minutes.

51.00: PENALTY TRY! YELLOW CARD! The Jaguares driving maul was collapsed illegally. Liam Messam is also sent to the sin-bin. 12-20

54.00: Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro loses the ball forward in the attempt to ground the ball for a try. The Chiefs are under the pump, but somehow, they survived the Jaguares onslaught.

55.00: The Chiefs survive, getting a free-kick for an early engagement.

57.00: Luke Jacobson wins the penalty at the breakdown. Brilliant defence from the Chiefs; they’re hanging in here with two players in the bin.

60.00: We have entered the final quarter. The Jaguares look to assert their forward dominance by going to their driving maul.

61.00: Boffelli breaks into the Chiefs 22, but Damian McKenzie, who looked off his feet, wins a miracle turnover, saving the day.

64.00: Charlie Ngatai breaks the game open after a wonderful jinking run. It came after Matias Orlando’s terrible judgement and worse clearance.

65.00: NO TRY! Ngatai’s try is ruled out because Nathan Harris knocked on while keeping the ball in play. That was very close. The Chiefs opted for the scrum inside the Jaguares 22.

67.00: The Jaguares survive the onslaught. Some big defence sees them clear their line, but only to the 22.

69.00: The Jaguares steal another lineout, go wide and win a penalty for a high tackle. Rettalick is spoken to by the ref for starting a fracas. Messam was pinged for the high tackle.

70.00: Boffelli kicks a wonderful kick to the corner.

71.00: Messam is – again – caught offsides. Sanchez will kick at goal.

71.00: PENALTY! Sanchez extends the Jaguares’ lead. 12-23

74.00: Harris can’t hear the lineout call, then he throws skew. That is four lineouts given away.

76.00: The Chiefs go quickly, but they go wide and lose the ball forward.

78.00: Time is running out.

82.00: TRY! Jesse Parete breaks two tackles and is in for a losing bonus-point score. 17-23
