Chiefs beat Reds in New Plymouth

Two-time Super Rugby champions the Chiefs are back home after a tour of South Africa this weekend and host the Reds.

The Chiefs only loss this season was in Cape Town to the Stormers and although they have recovered and are on a three-match winning streak they don’t look like a tournament winning side in recent weeks.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

The teams are out at Yarrow Stadium, New Plymouth. Jamie Nutbrown gets the game underway.

.00: Referee Jamie Nutbrown gets the game underway.

.00: Quade Cooper finds touch and the Chiefs will have the first throw into the lineout.

.00: The Reds get the scrum feed; their pack is weighing in at 910kg to the Kiwis 891kg, a big advantage.

.00: The Chiefs win a penalty and Damian McKenzie kicks to the corner. Izaia Perese was pinged for a high tackle.

.00: The Reds clear the danger after Charlie Ngatai dropped the ball on his angled run.

.00: Sef Fa’agase wins the ball after James Lowe loses the ball. Cooper kicks directly into touch and so the ref calls play back for because there was no advantage.

.00: Nepo Laulala is penalised for illegal scrumming. Cooper kicks to touch.

.00: Michael Leitch is next to be penalised for going off his feet. It’s another driving maul.

.00: TRY Stephen Moore! The skipper scored after an excellent driving maul.

.00: MISS! Cooper’s conversion rebounds off the post but the Reds lead after a good start.

.00: Jamie Nutbrown goes to the TMO to check for a Try/no try. It looks like Kane Hames is short. Scrum to the Chiefs on the 5. No! Shane McDermott awards the try.

.00: TRY Kane Hames! Wow! The big man gets his name in neon lights.

.00: McKenzie adds the conversion and the hosts lead by two after 15 minutes.

.00: The Chiefs are penalised for another ruck infringement. The Reds are on the front foot inside the Chiefs’ 22.

.00: TRY Eto Nabuli! The Reds hit back through the big winger who gathered a loose ball and dived over from close range. Lowe was unable to keep him from scoring.

.00: Copper makes no mistake this time and the visitors are back in front.

.00: Hendrik Tui is called for being in front of the kicker and the Chiefs opt for a shot at goal from in front.

.00: PENALTY! McKenzie reduces the deficit to three.

.00: It’s Hames who is penalised now, for a similar infringement to Hendrick Tui. Cooper kicks to the corner and the Australians will go to their maul.

.00: YELLOW CARD! George Smith is penalised for a high tackle.

.00: PENALTY! McKenzie’s second penalty puts his team back in the lead.

.00: The Reds have an attack but run out of ideas quickly. Cooper’s grubber gives the Chiefs the ball but deep inside their half.

.00: The Reds have the ball with a lineout.

.00: Cooper attempts a drop-goal after some phases inside the 22. Twice, the Reds kicked to the corner with easy penalties inside the same area, then they waste the good field possession with that kick.

.00: The Chiefs go down the field after Charlie Ngatai’s break. Brodie Retallick takes a quick-tap penalty and scores but the ref calls it back. The Chiefs go to the lineout.

.00: TRY Charlie Ngatai! It all started with the centre and he finishes the move. The Chiefs’ maul was stopped so they spread the ball wide to the left. Stephen Donald got the backline good go-forward and it’s a try. Scott Higginbotham is off with a shoulder injury.

.00: McKenzie adds the extras.

.00: The referee blows for half-time. It’s two tries apiece but McKenzie’s boot is the difference.

The half-time score was Chiefs 20 Reds 12

The territory is 50/50 and possession 53/47 percent in favour of the Reds. Time in the oppositions 22 is 3 minutes 25 seconds to the Chiefs and 3m 20s to the visitors.

.00: BEEP! BEEP! We are underway in the second half.

.00: TRY Dominic Bird! Straight from the kick-off, Sam Cane wins the ball and the Chiefs surge forward. Brodie Retallick is stopped short but Tawera Kerr-Barlow passes to Bird and the lock barged through some weak defence.

.00: MISS! McKenzie misses his first kick of the night.

.00: TRY Stephen Donald! It started from James Lowe’s break from his own 22. The winger ran 65 metres and after some quick ball, the All Black World Cup winner goes over for the Chiefs’ fourth try of the evening.

.00: The conversion is good from the fullback.

.00: The Reds are slowly, trying to build some attacking plays but are being stopped at every turn.

.00: James Lowe finds a magnificent touch with a low, raking kick. The Chiefs lose the ball on their throw but the hosts knock forward.

.00: TRY Stephen Donald at the double! It begins with a big scrum. Atu Moli pops to Tawera Kerr-Barlow who feeds the Old Man, on the angle. It’s too easy.

.00: McKenzie adds another conversion.

.00: TRY Campbell Magnay! Anton Lienert-Brown loses the ball in the ruck and the Reds counter-attack. Nabuli keeps the ball in play and the centre crashes over for the Reds’ third try.

.00: MISS! Cooper cannot add the extras.

.00: The teams are emptying their bench as the game enters the final quarter.

.00: Kerr-Barlow knocks on after the Chiefs win the turnover at the breakdown.

.00: The chiefs are wringing the changes and have most of the ball. The visitors are starting to tire.

.00: TRY James Lowe! The winger picks up a loose ball and shrugs off Cooper and speeds away. He steps inside the on-coming defenders and scores next to the posts.

.00: McKenzie doesn’t miss from there.

.00: The game is winding down and the intensity has dropped. The Aussies will be hoping for the hooter to put them out of their misery.

.00: The chiefs have the ball on the Reds’ line but lose a penalty. Smith was immense at the breakdown. Cooper clears.

.00: The hooter sounds and that’s the ball game.
