Chiefs beat Wales in Hamilton

Wales second match on their 2016 tour of New Zealand is in Hamilton against two-time Super Rugby Champions the Chiefs.

Wales have been forced into a late change to the side to face the Chiefs with Sam Warburton replacing Ellis Jenkins.

Jenkins misses the match with a tight thigh and Warburton comes straight into the starting XV.

There is also one change on the bench with Taulupe Faletau replacing Ross Moriarty.Luke Charteris will still captain the side.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick off.

Wales kick off and the match is underway.

1.00: Wales regain the ball from the kick off and go through 8 phases before conceding a penalty at the breakdown. Stephen Donald kicks for touch.

2.00: The Chiefs win the line out and they move the ball down the line. Anton Lienert-Brown races through but his pass Toni Pulu almost goes to ground and slows the attack. Wales turn the ball over and as the ball goes dead they get the put in.

4.00: The scrum has to be reset. Wales win the scrum but then lose the ball forward in the attack.

6.00: The Chiefs win the win and Tom Sanders breaks off the back for the Chiefs before he is pushed into touch.  The Chiefs steal the line out and run at Wales.

7.00: The Chiefs slip off a couple of tackles and Stephen Donald offloads to Brad Weber in the tackle and he races away to score under the posts. TRY!

8.00: Stephen Donald adds the conversion.

9.00: Wales press the Chiefs back in their half and then win a penalty. They take the line out option and kick for touch.

11.00: Wales win the line out but the Chiefs turn the ball over. They kick the ball upfield and Wales get the ball and run it through three phases before Rhys Priestland kicks for touch and finds the line about 10m out.

13.00: Wales go through 7 phases and Rob Evans races through the Chiefs and they get to the 5m line. The ball slows and goes dead but Wales will get the scrum put in – on the 5m line. There is a break in play for an injury.

15.00: Wales shove the Chiefs back in the scrum but the scrum disintegrates and has to be reset.

16.00: Wales win the scrum and they go for the line. Eli Walker goes for the line and reaches but he is short so Wales recycle the ball and go wide. They are called back for a penalty and take the scrum where the previous scrum was on the 5m line.

17.00: Wales win the scrum and drive over the line but they concede a penalty as they try to ground the ball. Donald clears the ball into touch.

19.00: The Chiefs win the line out but put the ball back into touch. Wales win the line out and begin their attack near the half way line. Gareth Davies slices through the Chiefs but gets isolated and the Chiefs turn the ball over and kick upfield.  Wales try to counter attack but then turn to the boot. The Chiefs boot the ball back and Wales concede a penalty. The touch judge missed a Welsh foot brushing the line but Wales kick to the corner.

21.00: The Chiefs come away with the ball from the line out and run it into the Wales half. The ball is taken into touch.

22.00: Wales win the ball from the line out and use the maul. The ball is moved slowly and it goes dead. The Chiefs will have a scrum after a player has been helped by the medics.

23.00: The match resumes with a scrum. The Chiefs win the scrum, run the ball and after two phases they win a penalty for not rolling away. Donald kicks for touch.

25.00: Wales win the line out and after one phase they kick upfield. The ball changes sides with the boot a couple of times and the Chiefs decide to run it. Andre Horrell chips the ball through and Anton Lienert-Brown almost gets the ball in space but he knocks on.

26.00; Michael Allardice has been replaced by Taleni Seu. The Chiefs win the scrum and run at Wales in their half. Wales slow them down and get the scrum put in.

29.00: Penalty to the Chiefs after the scrum for obstruction in the maul. Donald kicks for touch and the line out.

31.00: The Chiefs get the ball into the Wales 22. Wales press them back out in defence but the Chiefs go through 10 phases and get back inside the 22.

32.00: The Chiefs go through 17 phases using the pick and go and eventually a gap opens and Tom Sanders gets shoved over. TRY!

33.00 : Donald adds the conversion.

36.00: The Chiefs slip through a gap and Wales have to scramble in defence. They keep the ball moving forward and with each pass there is a another player ready for the ball. Siegfried Fisi’ihoi gets almost to the line and Stephen Donald gets the ball and dives over and scores in a double tackle. The TMO will have a look. The try is not awarded.

37.00: The Chiefs win the ball from a 5m scrum and go at the Wales tryline again. The Chiefs go through 8 phases and Dominic Bird weaves his way through Wales and goes over to score. TRY!

39.00: Donald adds the conversion.

40.00: Wales set up a line out in the Chiefs half. They win the line out and drive into the Chiefs 22.

41.00: Wales keep the ball moving through the forwards. The ball is recycled slowly and then they go to the backs. The Chiefs turn the ball over though and its taken into touch.

It’s half time.

The half time score was Chiefs 21 Wales 0

The second half is underway.

42.00: Wales get the ball into the Chiefs 22. They drive the ball forward in the maul after a line out but the ball goes dead.

43.00: The Chiefs get a free kick from the scrum so they kick upfield. Wales try to counter attack.

46.00: Wales are playing with more intent in the second half. They get the ball to the Chiefs 5m line. They go through the phases on attack but the Chiefs defence is solid.

47.00: Wales continue to attack the Chiefs line through 17 phases. The ball briefly changes sides but Wales recover it and continue their grinding attack.

49.00: The Chiefs hold Wales out after about four minutes of constant attack. Wales win a penalty and Priestland kicks for touch to the corner.

50.00: Wales win the line out but concede a penalty for obstruction. The Chiefs boot the ball upfield to clear.

53.00: Wales go through 20 phases on attack in the Chiefs half and they win a penalty. Stephen Donald looks to be struggling. Priestland kicks to the corner.

54.00: Wales win the line out and then a penalty for entering the maul on the side. They take the line out again. Jamie Roberts comes on for Wales.

55.00: Wales win the line out, use the maul and drive over. TRY! Kristian Dacey is the tryscorer.

56.00: Priestland adds the conversion.

58.00: Wales work the ball back to the Chiefs line and try to muscle their way over. After six phases they get to the line but cannot get over.

60.00: Wales go through 13 phases and get squeezed out into touch. Eli Walker did go for the corner but lost it as he went over/into touch.

62.00: Wales work the ball back into the Chiefs 22 but again they get pushed wide into touch.

65.00: The Chiefs get some attacking ball and James Lowe slices through the Wales backs. He is caught and Wales take the ball into touch.

66.00: The Chiefs take a quick line out and get the ball into the Wales 22. They break through the defence and the first time they get into the Wales 22 they score as Taleni Seu offloads to Lowe and scores. TRY!

68.00: Donald slots the conversion and limps off – the crowd are on their feet for him.

70.00: Eli Walker excites the crowd with a run down the wing but he is tackled into touch which saves a try.

73.00: Wales are holding on to the ball but the Chiefs are keeping them pinned back.

74.00: The Chiefs disrupt Wales’s ball and Taleni Seu kicks the ball to the line and  Toni Pulu gets to it and scores. Or does he ? The TMO will review. It’s a TRY!

75.00: The conversion is missed by Lowe.

77.00: The Chiefs kick the ball ahead and Sam McNicol beats everyone to the ball and races for the line and scores. TRY!

78.00: Lienert-Brown adds the conversion.

80.00: Wales get a penalty as the siren sounds. They tap it and run. Wales get to the Chiefs 22 but knock on.

Thats it. The Chiefs have won.
