Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

.00: BEEP! BEEP! Referee Paul Williams gets us underway in Hamilton. Aaron Cruden starts the game.

.00: The Waratahs win an early penalty. Bernard Foley kicks to touch. The visitors lose the ball and the Chiefs attack through Toni Puli and Stephen Donald.

.00: Brodie Retallick bursts through a hole in the Waratahs’ defence, throws a pass, but it goes forward. The Australians are under some very early pressure here.

.00: Damian McKenzie earns his side a penalty and Cruden kicks to touch.

.00: The Chiefs are knocking on the door. James Lowe has a go but is stopped. The hosts are awarded a penalty and will take the three.

.00: PENALTY! McKenzie puts his team on the board.

.00: Bernard Foley will take a shot at goal after the Tahs win a penalty. It came from Issy Folau’s break into the 22.

.00: PENALTY MISS! Foley’s kick hits the post. Michael Hooper knocks the rebound forward, so the Chiefs will get the scrum feed.

.00: TRY Mitchell Brown! It came from James Lowe’s pass and some good work from McKenzie in the build up.

.00: McKenzie’s conversion is good. The Chiefs have settled well and established an early, two-score lead.

.00: The Waratahs are under the pump in Hamilton. Tawera Kerr-Barlow and Mitchell Brown attack, the scrumhalf throws a pass out the back door, but it is lost forwards. This might be a very long day for the Aussies.

.00: The Chiefs are awarded a scrum penalty and McKenzie calls for the tee.

.00: PENALTY! McKenzie extends his team’s lead with his second PEN of the night.

.00: Hooper is penalised. The home team kick a deep touch finder and have another opportunity to put points on the board.

.00: The Waratahs survive after Liam Messam is pinged. They clear their lines, but their discipline and defence will need to be better.

.00: The Tahs send the ball through the hands, looking, probing the Chiefs’ D, but the lose possession after another lost ball.

.00: James Lowe is everywhere tonight. The wing is involved in most of his team’s best attacks, is good under the high ball and is electric with the ball in hand.

.00: TRY James Lowe! What did I say? He’s having a great game tonight. It came from the Waratahs mistake. Damian McKenzie, quality as ever, set up his three-quarter for the score after Donald’s chip-kick started the attack.

.00: Conversion Miss! The fullback cannot add the two points, but his side is looking rampant.

.00: Tom Robertson makes a run and helps set up some good field position for the Tahs. They go all the way to the Chiefs’ 22, then lose the ball. Not great at all.

.00: Dean Mumm picked up a loose ball and was away, looking for the try line, but a big cover tackle forces the ball free and the Chiefs will have the scrum. The visitors are their own worst enemy at the moment.

.00: Yellow Card Tolu Latu! That was not very clever. The hooker is sent to the bin for tripping McKenzie.

.00: Cruden kicks to touch; the Chiefs will want some more points here, just to give them some comfort, going into half-time.

.00: The Waratahs win the ball aback and surge up the field. They are getting some quick ball and sending it through the hands. They earn a penalty and Foley will look for three.

.00: PENALTY! Foley gets his team on the board, on the stroke of half-time.

The half-time score was Chiefs 18 Waratahs 3

.00: BEEP! BEEP! We are back underway in Hamilton. Bernard Foley restarts the game.

.00: TRY James Lowe! That’s two for the wing tonight. What a start to the half for the home side as they go short from the line-out and Tawera Kerr-Barlow throws a brilliant flick pass to the wing.

.00: Conversion: McKenzie, boom. The Chiefs lead is looking ominous now.

.00: TRY Tawera Kerr-Barlow! The home team are putting the visitors to the sword. The scrumhalf can be grateful to Lowe – who is on fire – for the score. Game over.

.00: McKenzie kicks his third conversion of the evening.

.00: Lowe keeps another Foley penalty touch finder in the field of play and he begins a counter-attack.

.00: TRY Rob Horne! The centre intercepts McKenzie’s long pass and races away to score.

.00: Foley converts the try.

.00: The Tahs will need a few more gifts if they are to become the first Australian team to beat a New Zealand franchise, this season.

.00: TRY Will Skelton! The Waratahs won a penalty on the Chiefs’ 22. The kicked to touch and set up a driving maul. Dean Mumm collected the lineout, set up the drive, but it is Skelton who crashes over.

.00: Foley adds the conversion, reducing the deficit to 15 points.

.00: TRY Kerr-Barlow! The scrummy gets his second after some excellent work in the build up by McKenzie and Donald.

.00: McKenzie’s conversion is good, and that is now the end for the Aussies.

.00: Yellow Cards Mitchell Brown (Chiefs) and Paddy Ryan (Waratahs)! Both are sent to the sideline for fighting.

.00: Foley makes a line break, sends the ball wide and the Tahs set up some quick phases. They are camped inside the Chiefs’ 22.

.00: Big defence from the Chiefs; they turn the ball over and clear.

.00: The Waratahs win a penalty and Foley kicks to touch. The Aussies are looking for consolation now. Hooper makes another break; his side is not giving in.

.00: TRY Cameron Clarke!

.00: Foley adds the extras.

.00: TRY Sekope Kepu! WOW! The Tahs attacked from deep after Horowitz breaks the line, next wave sees Kepu run 50 meters and he scores in the corner! What a try from the prop! Sensational!

.00: Foley reduces the gap.

.00: This game has come alive.

.00: TRY James Lowe! HAT-TRICK! What a performance by the wing. That will kill off the Aussies’ hopes.

.00: McKenzie converts.

.00: That is it in Hamilton.
