Christie thrilled with Highlanders ‘awesome’ tour finish

Highlanders co-captain Shane Christie says that it was “awesome” to finish their two match tour of Australia with a 3-27 victory in Melbourne.

The Highlanders gave the Rebels a master class in defence whilst also scoring three tries of their own to earn a bonus point.

The Highlanders kept the Rebels scoreless in the first half and in the second the home side could only add a penalty.

The Rebels have been the second best Australian team in 2016 behind the Brumbies but the Melbourne side never looked the would score a try against the Highlanders.

The victory over the Rebels comes a week after the Highlanders beat the Wartatahs in Sydney.

“It was an awesome way to finish (the two-match tour of Australia) — we wanted to put in an 80-minute performance and I think we did that tonight,” said Highlanders co-captain Shane Christie.

“We’ll now head back home and look forward to the Force next week.”

“We’ve had an awesome couple of weeks on the road and it will be nice to get back home.”

Rebels captain Sean McMahon conceded his team had been outplayed.

“The Highlanders came out and performed at top quality as you’d expect from a championship team,” McMahon said.

“All credit to our boys but we just let a few things go.

“They were coming hard at us — our defence was good but we turned too many balls over.

“They’re great at counterattack and you could see what they did to us when they got the opportunity.”
