Former Wallaby and Reds lineout specialist Matt Cockbain has been recruited as the QR Queensland Reds new ‘lineout doctor’.

Cockbain, who’ll work with the team on a part-time basis, is one of four specialists brought in to focus on particular areas of the Reds preparation for the 2007 Investec Super 14 series.

Cockbain was a member of the 1999 World Cup winning Wallabies and played 92 games for Queensland from 1995 to 2003, as a dominant force in the backrow and lineout.

Cockbain will work alongside another forward specialist in Alex Sanderson, in Australia on a professional development visit from Saracens Rugby Club in the UK, who will concentrate specifically on mauling, rucking and the backrow.

Former Broncos and Brumbies forward Peter Ryan will resume his specialist defensive work with the team, while a newcomer in match analyst Phillip Fowler will provide detailed analysis of opposition teams. As a trained sports psychologist who has worked successfully with other provinces, Fowler will also help individual players with their mental preparation.

Reds General Manager Alex Pope said the final pieces were now in place to accelerate the re-invigoration of the Queensland team under Head coach Eddie Jones.

‘With these new appointments we now have a strong mix of internationally experienced coaches to work under the direction of our head coach, Eddie Jones,’ Pope said.

‘The experience and skills of these individuals will meld to develop a successful and distinctive Queensland style of rugby for the Reds.’
