Hurricanes captain Dane Coles could wear a rib protector in this weekend’s Super Rugby Semi-final against the Chiefs in Wellington.

Coles left the field in agony during the Hurricanes 41-0 Super Rugby quarter final victory over the Sharks in Wellington on Saturday.

The injury has put Coles in severe doubt for the Hurricanes Semi-final but it’s understood that he has been testing rib protectors in a bid to play this weekend.

While there are a number of rugby products that Coles could wear on Saturday he is limited by World Rugby regulation 12 relating to player dress code which limits padding to 0.5cm when compressed.

A spokesman for the Hurricanes said that he did not know of Coles testing rib protectors but said he “won’t dismiss it, either”.

“I have no knowledge of anything. Usually they’d get it strapped up. ”

“I haven’t heard of rib protection in rugby,” he told Stuff.
