Conrad Smith could be out for six months

Hurricanes centre Conrad Smith underwent surgery at New Plymouth hospital on Sunday after suffering an injury against the Western Force in the 5th minute. Smith fractured both the tibia and fibula in his right leg and is expected to be out of rugby for four-to-six months.

The operation will result in a titanium rod inserted in the bone of Smith’s leg.Hurricanes coach Colin Cooper said the injury is a cruel blow for both Conrad Smith and the Hurricanes.

“Conrad is a huge loss to our side and the entire squad really feels for him,” said Cooper.

“Our thoughts are with him at present and in terms of the Hurricanes, we lose his qualities as an excellent decision maker and a key organiser of our backline.

“You can’t easily replace a player of his class, but we know he will bounce back strong once his rehab work is done.”

Smith made his Super 14 debut against the Cats in 2004 and his Test debut against Italy in the same year.
