Last year this match was an absolute borefest. Unbelievably the Lions beat the Crusaders 9-3 but that did come at a time when the Crusaders did not have their All Blacks and the match took place at Ellis Park.

3.00: The Lions got the first chance to put some points on the scoreboard after the Crusaders gave away an early penalty. Chris Jonck took the kick at the posts and slotted the penalty to put the Lions in the lead.


9.00: The Lions were next to give a penalty so Hamish Gard took a shot at goal and slotted the kick.


14.00: The Crusaders gave away a penalty for an infringement under the new rules so Chris Jonck took another shot at goal and slotted the kick.


24.00: Crusaders captain Reuben Thorne goes off and is replaced by  Kieran Read. Thorne appears to have a dislocated finger.


39.00: Rayno Benjamin is sent to the bin for taking a player out of the game without the ball.


40.06: The siren sounds for half time.

40.07: The Lions give a penalty away for offside so the Crusaders have a shot at goal and Hamish Gard misses it from almost the half way line.

Greg Somerville will captain the Crusaders for the remainder of the game.


42.00: The Lions start by giving away a penalty so Hamish Gard takes a shot at goal and slots the penalty to equal the scores. 


44.00: Using the numbers the Crusaders run the ball down the vacant wing and Sean Maitland looks to have scored a try. The replay shows his elbow touching the flag but the TV ref says he grounded the ball first.


46.00: Hamish Gard missed the conversion.


48.00 : The Lions give a penalty away so Hamish Gard has a shot and slots the penalty. Benjamin comes back on after serving ten minutes in the bin.


53.00: Ti’i Paulo takes a chance and drives for the line to score the Crusaders second try.


54.00: Hamish Gard’s conversion is awfully wide. Ti’i Paulo’s reward for scoring the try is that he is benched and replaced by Corey Flynn.


59.00: The Crusaders clearly have their momentum going now as Caleb Ralph scores their third try.


The Crusaders are now in the hunt for a bonus point try.


60.00: Hamish Gard’s conversion is again wide.  Rudi Vogt comes on for the Lions.


61.00: Andrew Ellis scores the binus point try by picking up the ball and launching himself over the ruck which is blocking his path to the tryline. The TV replay shows his Superman impression perfectly.


61.00: Hamish Gard slots the conversion.


70.00: The game is held up a little as Justin St. Jerry is helped from the field.


80.00: The Crusaders continue their charge but the hooter sounds for full time.
