Crusaders smash Highlanders in opener

The Crusaders started their Super 14 campaign with the same form that won them more Super 12 titles than any other team. They started off slow but once they got going they were almost unstoppable. McCaw had a huge game taking 10 line outs which was twice as many as any other player.

In the last few minutes the Crusaders scored an intercept try which gave them the Bonus point. Crusaders did however earn their first yellow for the season and were lucky not to have a penalty try given against them for a high tackle in the second half.

Although the score line does not show it the Highlanders dominated possession with 58 %. The stat also shows that if you give the Crusaders a gap in the Super 14 they will use it well.

Highlanders captain Anton Oliver said ,”We had parity in most of the game but they had three of four tries from turnover ball”

Oliver also said that a key moment in the game was when a penalty try was not given (in the second half) and would have turned the game around.

After the match Crusaders captain, Richie McCaw said he felt the game was a bit of a stop-start affair and his team lacked a bit of accuracy. McCaw said he was pleased with the result and that “Everyone did enough”
