Crusaders beat Waratahs in Christchurch




The Crusaders and Waratahs meet for this clash which is a rematch of three past Super rugby finals.

The Crusaders have played the Waratahs 24 times in Super Rugby and they have won 18 matches and lost 6 matches. There have been no draws between the sides.

0.08: The Crusaders win a penalty for tackling a player in the air. They kick for touch.

1.00: The Crusaders win the line out but the Waratahs defend. The Waratahs turn the ball over and kick, the ball is charged down but again the Waratahs survive as they get the ball back.

3.00: Turnovers galore as the ball changes sides over and over. The Waratahs throw the ball down the line with speed and Cam Clark gets it and races for the line and scores. TRY!

5.00: Bernard Foley misses the conversion.

7.00: The first scrum of the match collapses so has to be reset. There was a knock on which forced the scrum to be reset.  The Waratahs win the scrum in their 22 and run it.

9.00: The Waratahs have the ball on attack. They have the advantage near the half way line. Foley kicks for touch but the whistle goes for the penalty. Foley will have a shot at posts.

12.00: Foley takes the kick – it’s a long one – but he nails it.

15.00: Penalty to the Waratahs from the scrum just inside their 22. Foley kicks for touch but doesn’t find it. The Crusaders get the ball, go through two phases but Taqele Naiyaravoro intercepts by plucking the ball out of the air and races away to score. TRY!

22.00: The Waratahs win the scrum after the knock on and then kick. The Crusaders kick the ball back and Israel Folau collects the ball and passes to Kurtley Beale who runs, sucks in a defender and offloads back to Folau who scores. TRY! 

23.00: Foley adds the conversion. Three tries to nil !

26.00: The Waratahs push the Crusaders back into their 22. The Crusaders have to kick for touch as they are trapped.

27.00: The Wartatahs win the line out, kick wide for Folau who takes it cleanly. He is tackled and in the tackle George Bridge knocks the ball back and Curtis Rona pounces and scores. TRY! 

29.00: Foley adds the conversion.

31.00: The Crusaders go through 13 phases and get the ball to the Waratahs 22. A Tahs player goes off his feet so the Crusaders have a penalty. They kick for touch and the line out.

33.00: The Crusaders win the line out, use the maul and then pass the ball down the line but it goes to ground. The Waratahs send it in to touch.

34.00: The Waratahs come away with the ball after the line out in their 22. They pass the ball down the line but it goes to ground. Folau gets to it but the Crusaders arrive in numbers and after a couple of phases Joe Moody slips through a gap and scores. TRY!

35.00: Richie Mo’unga adds the conversion.

36.00: The Crusaders win a line out, drive 5m and get over the line and score. Codie Taylor comes up with the ball. TRY!

38.00: Richie Mo’unga misses the conversion.

40.00: The siren sounds for half time as the Crusaders turn the ball over. It’s kicked ahead but the Crusaders win a penalty. They kick for touch.

41.00: The Crusaders win the line out, they get the ball to the line. The double whistle goes and Nick Phipps is yellow carded. The Crusaders take a scrum.

42.00: The Crusaders win the scrum and go wide out to Seta Tamanivalu who crashes over in a double tackle but scores. TRY! Folau and Beale couldn’t stop him.

44.00: Mo’unga nails the conversion from out wide.

Mo’unga kicks off and the second half is underway. Waratahs start with 14 players as Phipps is still in the bin.

41.00: The Waratahs tackle Tim Bateman high so the Crusaders have a penalty. They kick for touch and it goes to Beale who kicks it to the half way line.

42.00:  Pete Samu almost scores a try for the home side but there was a knock on in the build up so the Waratahs have a 5m scrum. They win the scrum and clear the ball.

44.00: Penalty to the Waratahs who were under some pressure in their half. Foley kicks for touch and finds it.

45.00: The line out is won by the Waratahs but the ball is knocked on by the Crusaders. Waratahs scrum next to the half way line.

48.00: Nick Phipps comes back on.

50.00: The Crusaders win a line out on the 5m line. The Waratahs defend well and the Crusaders knock on.

52.00: The Waratahs win scrum and clear the ball. The Crusaders begin their counter attack – they have the advantage and an overlap when Taqele Naiyaravoro intentionally knocks the ball down. He is yellow carded. The Crusaders take the line out.

53.00: The Crusaders win the line out and attack the line, they change sides and have the advantage and Manasa Mataele goes over but the Crusaders are called back for an earlier offside. The Crusaders take a 5m scrum.

61.00: It’s all the Crusaders now. Mitchell Drummond gets the ball in space after the Crusaders break out. He runs for the line but doesn’t have the pace to get away and is caught. The Crusaders recycle the ball and go wide but the Waratahs scramble and defend well but then knock on.

62.00: Naiyaravoro comes back on. The Crusaders win the scrum and attack on the 5m line. Crusaders go at the line again and again.

63.00: The Crusaders go over but it’s not clear. The TMO will check. No try. 5m scrum.

65.00: Penalty to the Crusaders for collapsing the scrum. They take another scrum.

66.00: Another penalty to the Crusaders for collapsing. They take another scrum.

67.00: Penalty TRY! The scrum disintegrates and the penalty try is awarded. You could feel it was coming. It’s an automatic 7 points to the Crusaders who now lead.

73.00: The Waratahs are awarded a penalty. Hooper points to the posts its well out. Right on the edge of Foleys range, He misses.

76.00: The Waratahs look to have saved themselves for the last 5 minutes. The Waratahs are full of attack but there is a knock on.

79.00: The Waratahs have the ball on attack. They go through the phases but the Crusaders are holding on and defending.

80.00: The whistle goes for not releasing – that’s it. The Crusaders kick the ball out and win.
