Crusaders beat Waratahs in Christchurch




The first Super Rugby match in Round 13 is in Christchurch New Zealand where the Crusaders host the Waratahs from Sydney.

Bernard Foley kicks off and the match is underway.

1.00:The ball is taken almost straight into touch. The Waratahs win the line out and run the ball but then it is knocked on by the Crusaders. First scrum.

2.00: The Waratahs scrum wins the ball but the Crusaders turn the ball over and begin their attack.

3.00: After 5 phases a gap opens up for Joe Moody who makes huge ground. He passes to Israel Dagg who makes more ground and then offloads. The ball goes wide to Johnny McNicholl who scores in the corner. The TMO will check the grounding. The TMO approves and its a TRY!

4.00: Richie Mo’unga adds the conversion.

6.00: The Crusaders get some attacking ball and they get almost into the Waratahs 22 but they knock on.

7.00: The Waratahs win the scrum, kick the ball away. Dagg returns the kick but it goes into touch on the full. The rain has really started to come down now.

8.00: The Crusaders (Mo’unga) kick the ball wide to McNicholl who catches the ball whilst being tackled and passes to Israel Dagg who scores. TRY!

9.00: Mo’unga can’t convert the try.

12.00: McNicholl gets the ball from a high kick and races to the corner and scores. But wait, Jaco Peyper rules the try out as Matt Todd did not retreat 10m and effectively offside. Waratahs kick to the touchline for the penalty.

15.00: The Crusaders work the ball upfield and Andy Ellis uses the box kick. The Crusaders chase the ball but the Waratahs get it and get pushed into touch.

16.00: The Crusaders win the line out and run at the Waratahs. Dean Mumm is caught playing the ball off his feet so the Crusaders have a penalty.

17.00: Richie Mo’unga takes the kick and nails it.

18.00: The Waratahs win the ball on a turn over after the restart. They go through about four phases on the Crusaders 22m line before the Crusaders turn the ball over and kick upfield.

19.00: The Waratahs retreat to get the ball and kick for touch.

20.00: Penalty to the Crusaders as the Waratahs had two halfbacks at the line out. The Crusaders choose the scrum.

23.00: The Crusaders win the scrum and kick to the corner – it goes straight into touch.

25.00: The Waratahs get some good attacking territory in the Crusaders half. They go through 5 phases and Israel Folau slips through a gap and passes to Rob Horne. The ball is lost but Rob Horne gets a boot to it and chases and scores. TRY!

26.00: Bernard Foley takes the conversion kick from out wide. He misses.

29.00: Penalty to the Crusaders as the Waratahs are caught offside as they chase a ball. Mo’unga lines up the penalty kick but he misses.

32.00: The Waratahs kick the ball upfield. The ball bounces off a player’s head and then to Dagg who boots it back upfield. The ball is kicked back and forth and the Crusaders choose to run it.

35.00: The Crusaders win a line out in the Waratahs half. Andy Ellis slices through and offloads to Richie Mo’unga who races through and scores. The TMO checks the try. Oddly Mo’unga takes the drop goal and then the TMO checks the try. The try is cleared and Mo’unga adds the conversion. Mo’unga actually got the drop and the conversion but only one will count.

37.00: Penalty to the Crusaders for not releasing the ball. Mo’unga kicks for touch.

39.00: The Waratahs secure loose ball in their half. They try to work the ball upfield keeping it in the forwards. After four phases Foley runs the ball.

40.00: The siren sounds. The Waratahs continue to attack but then they kick it away and Dagg gets the ball and kicks it into touch ending the half.

Richie Mo’unga kicks off and the second half is underway.

41.00: The Waratahs win an early penalty from the breakdown. Foley kicks for touch.

42.00: The Waratahs make a strong start as they win the line out and work the ball up to the Crusaders 22. They go through 8 phases and get pushed back a little but continue to bash away. On the 9th phase the Crusaders turn the ball over. Jone Macilai gets into space and runs down the sideline. He gets tackled offloads and the Crusaders are caught offside.

46.00: The Crusaders knock the ball on inside the Waratahs half giving the Tahs a scrum just outside their 22.

47.00: Early movement in the scrum forces a reset.

48.00: The Waratahs win the scrum and kick the ball away. The ball goes from side to side in a kicking contest. Mo’unga eventually finds some space and the ball rolls out and into touch.

51.00: The Waratahs win a penalty for collapsing the maul. Foley kicks for touch.

53.00: The Waratahs win the line out in the Crusaders half. They get into the Crusaders 22 and the Saders have to scramble in defence.

56.00: The Crusaders turn the ball over and McNicholl runs the ball out from behind the Crusaders tryline. He passes to Dagg but Horne gets a hand to the ball and the ball goes back to McNicholl and he chips the ball ahead. The Waratahs chase it and get back and dot the ball down. The Crusaders have a 5m attacking scrum.

57.00: A big scrum wins the Crusaders a penalty for offside. The Crusaders choose another scrum.

58.00: The Crusaders win the scrum but they can’t get over. There will be another scrum.

59.00: Free kick to the Crusaders. Ellis takes the quick tap. The Crusaders get the ball on the line and Jordan Taufua crashes over next to the post. TRY!

61.00: Mo’unga adds the conversion.

62.00: Zac Guildford an three others come on for the Waratahs.

64.00: Out almost nothing after a line out Zac Guildford slices through the Crusaders and scores for the Waratahs. TRY!

Bernard Foley misses the conversion. That try cost the Crusaders a potential bonus point.

68.00; The Waratahs are back on the attack. Matt Lucas makes a dash for the line but he is unable to get the ball down. Penalty to the Waratahs. They go again and again the Crusaders concede a penalty. The Crusaders are on a warning.

69.00: The Waratahs get the ball to 5m out in front of the posts. They go wide on the sixth phase but when they get to the touchline the Crusaders turn the ball over and kick it into touch.

73.00: The handbags come out and there is some push and shove between the players. It dies down.

74.00: Andy Ellis comes off after winning his 150th Super Rugby cap.

77.00: The Crusaders win a scrum near the half way line. They run the ball almost to the Waratahs 22 but there is a knock on.

78.00: The Crusaders win the scrum but the Waratahs turn the ball over in their 22. Guildford runs through and almost gets the Waratahs to the half way line.

80.00: The siren sounds as the Waratahs put the ball in with a line out.

81.00: The Waratahs go through several phases but remain on the half way line as they go from side to side.

82.00: The Waratahs continue to work the ball through the phases but they keep getting pressed back. They kick the ball away and McNicholl gets the ball and starts the counter attack.

The ball is lost forward which ends the match. The Crusaders have won.
