The Stormers management are said to be looking at employing Crusaders coach Robbie Deans if current coach Kobus van der Merwe can’t turn the Cape team’s season around.

Stormers CEO Rob Wagner and director of rugby Nick Mallett have gone to Australia to assess the Stormers situtation and if the situation does not improve Van der Merwe could find himself looking for work.

A South African blogging website reports that Deans recently met informally with Nick Mallett where they discussed the possibility of a move to the Cape when his contract expires with Canterbury at the end of this season.

“I have had an informal contact with Robbie Deans for the purposes of finding out what his current contract commitments are,” said Mallett.

“What he said to me will remain confidential until I give the information to the Stormers board.”

“There has been a request by the board for us to undertake an investigation but obviously, quite apart from the concern about this season’s performances, there is a need to look at the future and consider our options.”

Although Deans has led the Crusaders to three titles, it is rumoured that he is not the favourite to succeed Graham Henry as All Blacks coach after the World Cup with assistant coach Steve Hansen said to be the favourite.

Deans and Hansen are also said to not get along so it is unlikely that either coach will be appointed as an assistant to the other.

At this stage nothing official is said to have been offered and Alan Solomons who coached the Stormers in 1999 where they made the Semi finals is also said to be in the running.
